The Mystery Van

The engineers working on the ground consolidation works have informed the police of a suspicious van seen around the lanes on Sunday and again today.

It might be prudent for residents to keep an eye out for it. It’s a white Citroen van, registration Y76 LNE.

Timorous Beasties

Sadly neither wee nor cowerin’, it appears there has been an increase in the numbers of mice in the area. Several flats on the odd-numbered side of Nithsdale Road have reported the sudden appearance of our furry foes since January.

If you think you’ve got mice, don’t suffer in silence! Two residents will be visiting the closes in turn next week to find out the scale of the problem and to see if we can co-ordinate a response.

Given the timing of their appearance, the Society have also contacted the council and Forkers to see if this is a problem they’ve come across before during these types of work and if they can offer advice.

In the meantime, general advice for those with a mouse in the house:

Tell-tale signs you have mice: droppings, especially in cupboards and on kitchen work surfaces – they are about the size of a grain of rice and pointed at the ends -, nibble marks or holes in boxes and containers, mysterious squeaks and noises. If you want to be sure, try covering a small area of floor or work surface in your kitchen with cornflour or ordinary flour before you go to bed. Rodents will leave a trail of footprints through it.

Getting rid of mice is tricky, especially if they are established in a terraced block. In your own home, keep on top of crumbs and food waste. Store cereals, rice, flour etc in sealed containers, locate small holes around your house and fill, even if just with rolled up newspaper.

Residents have been trying traps and poison with varying degrees of success. If the problem is as widespread as we suspect it may be worth clubbing together to get the problem treated, otherwise the mice will simply move from house to house!

Have Your Say On The Back Lanes

The deadline for getting survey responses in is Saturday 25th February. Everyone on the lanes affected will have had a survey letter hand delivered with their last issue of The Strathbungo News.

Your response can be dropped of to Laura Moodie, Chair, The Strathbungo Society, G/L, 33 Nithsdale Road. There should be someone in all day Friday, at various points on Saturday daytime and on Saturday evening.

Bins set alight in Thorncliffe Lane

I saw to my disgust this morning when walking my dog down Thorncliffe Lane, that many of the bins left out for collection had been set alight, melting not only the bins themselves and incinerating the contents, but also damaging a number of garages.   I’m not sure if this was the only back lane affected, but just in case this is the start of something, I’d recommend everyone taken their bins in once emptied and put out as late as possible.  One of the piles was still smoking when I walked past at about 8am, so, given the rain overnight, this must have happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Back Lanes Meeting Outcome

A big thank you to all the residents who ventured out on a cold, damp February night to discuss the proposals to improve the back lanes.

The people at the meeting (representing around 10% of those contacted) agreed unanimously that they wanted the Society to pursue option 2 – uplifting and resetting the existing cobbles. If you have yet to respond to the letter you received, please do so ASAP. The closing date is this Saturday, 25th February and it can be posted or delivered by hand – there’s usually someone in – to G/L, 33 Nithsdale Rd. If you are still making up your mind, our Frequently Asked Questions sheet may help you: Back Lanes Reinstatement FAQs

Once the results are in we will be reporting back to the Council and residents will then be offered the option to opt out of any proposed works.

Those at the meeting also agreed that as this option came well within the proposed budget we would ask the Council and Forkers to consider carrying extending the works to neighbouring lanes. If the Council agrees to this in principle, we will be arranging another meeting to discuss this with those residents next month.

If you go down to the shops today…

You’re in for a big surprise!

Film crews are on location all day today around the shops in West Pollokshields. They are filming scenes for the new adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s 1998 novel Filth.

There is a little disruption as the police are stopping traffic for some scenes but on the whole it’s an interesting peek behind the scenes at the film industry. And, as you can see in the picture, it’s a serious industry with several large vans, oodles of equipment, crew and actors.

Scottish actor James McAvoy (who plays the lead – corrupt cop Bruce Robertson)  is filming today and glamorous it is not with lots of patient waiting around for the right light and keeping people out of the way while he crosses the road or is filmed getting out of the car.

I’m also not sure whether they’re going for 1990s period authenticity but the parka he’s dressed in has a distinct gallagher-brothers-circa-1997 aura. Then again, maybe he’s just cold!

Children’s Art Competition 2012

The Strathbungo Society is pleased to open the entries for this year’s Children’s Art Competition.

Now in its third year, the event is going from strength to strength with more than 200 entries in 2011. You can still view a slide show of all last year’s winning artwork here: Strathbungo Art Competition 2011.

The theme for 2012 is “Strathbungo From My Window” (literal or metaphorical!) and as well as great images of our local architecture we suspect there might be more than a few pictures of diggers this year!

The competition is open to all children from 0-16, split into four age groups. You can download an entry form below, or pick one up from the local venues who will be displaying the winning artworks for two weeks from 19th March.

As ever, the only place to see all entries displayed and all the winners together is at Strathbungo’s Spring Fling in Queens Park Parish Church Hall on Saturday 17th March.

You can download the rules and prize information here: prizes & rules info for art competition Spring Fling 2012

Back Lanes Repair Letter

A letter has now been delivered to every resident living on the back lanes affected by the current ground consolidation works asking for their opinions on how the back lanes can best be improved once the work is completed. You can also read it here:back_lanes_letter_final

A public meeting will be held at Queens Park Parish Church Hall on Monday 20th February, 7.30-9pm to discuss the proposals.

The Society will pass on the results of the consultation to the Council by the end of the month with any work commencing as soon as the ground consolidation scheme is complete.
