Bungo Birl Raffle Prizes

We’re looking for donations for the raffle please!

And we’re looking for donations which are a bit special.

As well as the usual bottles etc. (all very gratefully received), we’re looking for the donations of time from the very talented Strathbungo people!

Do you have a skill we could raffle? For example, we already have a music lesson, a weekend away and an IT Healthcheck to raffle and we’re looking for more of that ilk.

Are you a dressmaker who could raffle some time to make a simple outfit for someone? Are you an animal portrait artist who could raffle some time to sketch a loved pet?

Are you a gardener who could raffle some time to do a bit of a tidy up in time for winter?

You get it now!!

OR

Do you have something vintage in fab condition you no longer love that you could donate?

Or any photographers/artists/sculptors out there who could donate a framed picture or piece of art?

Anything really.

All donations will be considered!

Thanks in anticipation

This Sunday (15th September) will see the next Brighter Bungo community cleanup. We’ll be at the corner of Nithsdale Road and Moray Place between 11am and 1pm, so please pop along anytime. Litter pickers, gloves, black bags and high-visibility vests are provided; just bring yourself.

Volunteers Needed to Help Deliver Newsletter

The newsletter is ready, but Andrew desperately needs more people to help deliver it. It’s a relatively easy job that only comes four times a year, so why not step up? When there’s someone for each street, it’s quick and easy. However, when a few people have to do all the work, it’s really hard on them. Lately, Andrew and Stephen have been going above and beyond, handling many of the streets themselves.

Here are the routes that need people for newsletter delivery:

  • March Street
  • Both sides of Nithsdale Road
  • Queen Square
  • Pollokshaws Road, Nithsdale Rd./Torrisdale to Allison, both sides
  • Pollokshaws Road, the park to Torrisdale, east side

It would also make a certain amount of sense to deliver to Nithsdale Drive and to Pollokshaws Road between Allison and Calder, if anyone is willing to take that on. Not everyone is able to read the newsletter or find out about community events online, and that’s why newsletter delivery is still important.

If you’ve got half an hour four times a year to help deliver the newsletter, then contact Andrew at adownie (at) doctors (dot) org (dot) uk. He’d love to hear from you!

Just as a reminder, the Strathbungo Society is an all-volunteer community organisation, not a business or even a social enterprise.

Lovestruck is Open!

Just a heads-up to all the cheesecake lovers out there: the Lovestruck Cheesecake Cafe opens officially tomorrow, Tuesday, September 2nd. They’re down the block from Shimla Pink’s, in the spot where the candy shop used to be.

There’ll be art photography on the walls, hand painted tables and locally roasted Dear Green coffee. I’ve tried the cheesecakes, and they are really nice. The creative flavours, like rosemary-lemon and spicy chocolate, are especially good. These are real, baked mini-cheescakes; no Philly cream cheese shortcuts. They’re a nice size, too. Not too big and not too small. Try them out and see what you think.

The Newest Strathbungo Society Newsletter has gone to the printer’s, and you can get a jump on it by downloading it here. Just click on the picture to the left. This quarter’s newsletter has articles on the old Strathbungo Kirk, the new Buddy’s restaurant opening on Pollokshaw’s Road, the new Lovestruck cheese cake cafe, and more. Meet our new columnist: the Grumpy Pensioner. Get energy saving tips from South Seeds. There are plenty of pictures of this year’s Bungo in the Back Lanes, too.

Thanks so much for everyone who took the time to look it over on short notice. Thanks especially to Andrew Downie, who caught several misspelled names.

Any problems with BungoBlog?

I just updated BungoBlog to WordPress version 3.6, and I’ve been updating plug-ins over the past few weeks, too. That means that some of Matt’s customizations might have gotten steamrolled in the process and that new bugs could have been introduced. If you notice anything wrong with BungoBlog, please let me know in the comments and I’ll see if I can fix it. -Dee

Where on earth…?

Mystery Building in StrathbungoYou were asked to identify the Strathbungo building below, and its location.

Strathbungo Parish Church TodayNow the newsletter is out, I can reveal this was the first Strathbungo Parish Church, built in 1839, but demolished sometime after 1883. The photo dates from around 1879.

The second church was built on the same site, reusing much of the stone, in 1887-88. The facade of the second church still stands on Pollokshaws Road, even though the rest of the church was demolished in 2006. The facade was incorporated into the modern flats. The current view from the same spot is shown on the right.

You can read more about Strathbungo’s church in the newsletter, when it drops through your door, or by downloading it from this blog.
