Queens Park Arena – Get Involved

After a successful opening event in October last year, the Queens Park Arena (QPA) are looking for people to get involved with planning events, shows and activities in the arena over the coming year.

Their AGM will be held on March 20th but in the meantime you can download a leaflet on volunteering opportunities here: QPA_volunteering

The Strathbungo Society part-funded the arena and are keen to work in partnership with them on events and activities. Unfortunately, their meetings tend to clash with our committee meetings so we’ve been unable to send a regular representative.

If you’re reading this and are interested in the QPA and the Society, why not attend meetings as the Strathbungo rep? All we ask in return is an account of the meeting for the committee and that you raise any issues the Society might have to bring to the group. Get in touch via the comments here, Facebook or email chair@strathbungo.co.uk if you want to help.

St Bride’s Swimming Pool Closure Plans

Glasgow City Council is planning to close St Bride’s Primary School’s pool, in the basement of the listed building. Four such pools are earmarked for closure, putting pressure on an already limited resource, especially in the Southside.

Many community groups and local schools, not just St Bride’s, use this valuable community facility to teach primary school pupils to swim and a decision on the closure is expected to be made on 7th February.
What can you do to help?

  • Write to your councillors by post or by email, asking them to help save the pool at St Bride’s.
  • Go to your local councillor’s surgeriess and let them know you want to help save the pool.
  • Join us from 12 noon on 7-2-13 outside the City Chambers before the full council votes on the budget.
  • You could also print and distribute this  flyer: swimming pool next

The Strathbungo Society will be gathering for a wee Christmas Sherry (!) in the Bungo, Nithsdale Road from 7.30 on Monday, 17th December. You are all welcome to attend as it will be an informal gathering in the bar. We hope it will be an opportunity for people involved with the Society and events (past, present and hopefully future) to get together and have a chat without being crowded out with committee issues.
Hope to see you there!

A Local Shopping Wish List

It’s been hard to miss the speedy work being done to build the new Sainsbury’s Local store on Darnley Road. The construction is in the final stages and a lot of residents have been discussing the pros and cons of the new store opening and the impact on local businesses.

In fact, some residents have gone further than just discussing the issue and have written letters to Sainsbury’s to raise their concerns and suggest items the shop might stock and not stock!

Our small, local shops give the area a real buzz and unique atmosphere but almost everyone will use supermarkets for some if not most of their shopping – wouldn’t it be great if we could model our local supermarket to stock the items we otherwise travel out of the area to get?

I’ve attached a copy of the basic letter but everyone is bound to have a different wishlist of items, so if you want to try to influence the stock list, what have you got to lose? Now’s your chance! General Sainsburys list

The letter can be posted to the head office:

Glorious Gardens Show

Saturday sees one of my favourite events of the Glasgow summer – the New Victoria Gardens Summer Show.

I might be biased as a plotholder but it’s a fantastic day out for all the family and this year the NVG Allotment Association can boast two prizes – one for Glasgow’s most sustainable allotment and the coveted St Mungo’s Trophy awarded to the best allotment in the whole city.

Come through the green door in the wall to glimpse this little oasis in the middle of the city. Marvel over how lush the wet weather has made it, gasp in wonder that any produce managed to grow at all and enjoy great baking and crafts with the opportunity to buy some of the prize-winning produce to take home.

And do pop in to plot 22 (not prize-winning but much-loved) and say hello!

Bungo Gardeners Wanted

Enthusiastic but thwarted gardener? Fancy growing fruit and veg but don’t have the space at home? Local not-for-profit food shop Locavore has adopted the planters at Pollokshields West Station and will be filling them with strawberries, rhubarb and other edible delights over the coming weeks.

The first planting session was tonight and the next is from 6.30pm on Wednesday29th August. Just turn up ready to work and look forward to admiring the fruits of your labours whenever you catch the train.

The GSR South Side Comedy Club

People of the Bungo. Bungonians, Bungites, The Bung.

Greetings from The Greater Shawlands Republic. As you may know, the GSR is a satire movement which seeks independence for the south side of Glasgow. To that end, we provide cabaret/comedy events downstairs in The Bungo Bar and Kitchen, Nithsdale Road, on the 1st Sunday of each month.

The main aim of the GSR (autonomy aside) is to provide a high quality comedy night for people in the south side. An alternative to schlepping all the way into town or to the west end for your comedy fix. You could still do that, of course – but we’re on your doorstep and only six pounds. Or six polloks, rather ( the GSR has it’s own currency).

So far, the shows and the feedback have been excellent. We have featured comedians of the calibre and reputation of Fred MacAuley and Phillip Differ, we’ve been featured and interviewed by BBC Radio Scotland’s Comedy Cafe and our gigs are invariably sold-out.

We sincerely believe we’re providing something distinct , valuable and great fun. We want to make GSR at The Bungo the official south side comedy club. You know, “our place”. For the southsiders.

So, come down and join the party some time. It’s Sunday night laughs, a little live music, some close-up magic and and a very friendly atmosphere.
