Saturday sees one of my favourite events of the Glasgow summer – the New Victoria Gardens Summer Show.

I might be biased as a plotholder but it’s a fantastic day out for all the family and this year the NVG Allotment Association can boast two prizes – one for Glasgow’s most sustainable allotment and the coveted St Mungo’s Trophy awarded to the best allotment in the whole city.

Come through the green door in the wall to glimpse this little oasis in the middle of the city. Marvel over how lush the wet weather has made it, gasp in wonder that any produce managed to grow at all and enjoy great baking and crafts with the opportunity to buy some of the prize-winning produce to take home.

And do pop in to plot 22 (not prize-winning but much-loved) and say hello!

Enthusiastic but thwarted gardener? Fancy growing fruit and veg but don’t have the space at home? Local not-for-profit food shop Locavore has adopted the planters at Pollokshields West Station and will be filling them with strawberries, rhubarb and other edible delights over the coming weeks.

The first planting session was tonight and the next is from 6.30pm on Wednesday29th August. Just turn up ready to work and look forward to admiring the fruits of your labours whenever you catch the train.

Something that’s been talked about a bit in the past but never really progressed is the idea of creating Strathbungo welcome packs for people new to the area. If you sell up or let to new tenants, it could be something you leave behind.

The main purpose would be to fill in the annoying knowledge gaps you often get when moving to a new place – what’s the bin etiquette? Where’s the nearest doctor? A good plumber? A free cash machine? A lot of this info is on the blog…but how do you find out about the blog?

I think it would be great if the Society could put together something that movers could print out and leave for the new residents – a nice way to say hello to the neighbourhood and make them feel part of the Bungo community.

What would you like to see included? What do you wish you’d known about when you moved here, or what do you wish your new neighbours had known about!

It must be spring – rare species are cropping up everywhere and the latest to fly into our neck of the woods is…a free cash machine.

Yes, no more traipsing to the 24hr garage or Vicky Rd to get your mitts on your hard-earned cash without paying for the privilege. Maxwell’s the off-licence and grocer on Nithsdale Road, has just installed a shiny new FREE hole in the wall machine.

It’s the small things that make all the difference.
