Neighbours entertaining neighbours on Titwood Road

It may have escaped the watchful eye of the Bungo Blog but since lockdown a musical event has taken place every Saturday evening on Titwood Road. Following the initial Thursday “Clap for the NHS”, all of the neighbours on Titwood Road from the corner of Pollokshaws Road to the corner of Thorncliffe Gardens/Waverley Street got together in an attempt to soften the blow of isolation.

Those residents who can play a musical instrument (and/or sing) entertain the others who are more than willing listeners during an historic, unique and never to be forgotten period in the lives of all of us. All of this is enhanced by the presence of one of the neighbours Grant Parfery who is a professional photographer. During each concert Grant has captured the atmosphere in photographs and videos which have come to the notice of the Royal photographer, the Daily Record and Glasgow Live.

Those in attendance vary in age from toddlers to octogenarians. The occasion has become one to savour and eagerly anticipate for all of us. We share glasses of wine, beer and whisky whilst keeping each other good company at distances well in excess of the 2 metres recommended. Friends and relatives have heard about the concert by word of mouth and are adding to the friendly atmosphere by their attendance albeit still maintaining a safe distance. The event takes place – whilst Lockdown is with us – each Saturday evening between 6.30 pm and approximately 8.00 pm. Images can be obtained from the Facebook page of Grant Parfery.

Bungo in the Back Lanes 2019

A huge thanks to all the Society members who put months of planning in to this year’s event, the volunteers who helped setup, steward, and take down, the imaginative stall holders, the musicians, and everyone who came along to make the event another great success. Here’s a few random snaps of the day, with thanks to Craig Johnston for several of them.

And if you want to get more involved, planning starts again in the den at The Bungo on Tuesday 16th July, 7.30pm. There’s no let up. Come along if you have any great ideas to improve this or any other of our events!

If you have any good pictures, you can email us, or use the submission form, Write!

See you next year.

Window Wanderland

This year’s Window Wanderland was another great success, with the artistic spirit to the fore, backed by Pollywood Cinema, Brass Aye, and a live juke box.

It was mobbed on the night – we could do with more stewards and fewer cars next year – and it made the attention of the Observer.

Photographer Stefan Krajcik has once again provided some stunning photographs for us all to share.

So what are you going to do next year?

Baby Sitter

Hi, I am a 6th year Shawlands Academy pupil looking for regular baby sitting work and can also assist with primary school home work. I have lots of experience with children as I have volunteered in an after school club for children with additional needs as part of my Duke of Edinburgh and I have also helped out at my school netball club. I also currently do arts and crafts with children at Govanhill community canteen. I live locally in the bungo and will charge £5.50 per hour. Call or text 07542 021501 to get in touch. I can also send my cv and supply references if interested 🙂

Putting the satire back into the Saltire

Where is all the biting Scottish Political satire these days? It seems to have just disappeared along with original Irn Bru and your online personal data. Well two of your Bungo neighbours have decided to do something about it!

Putting their years of experience to work the result is News Hacks. With a hysterical new script each month they deliver a fresh take on the news, those making the news, plus a smattering of side swipes at life in general in 21st century Scotland. If you watch, listen or read the news on any platform this is the show that puts it all into perspective. No one is immune from their spotlight.

Karen Townsend and Rikki Brown, who live in one of the garden streets, have set up a theatre production company, Bialystock and Brown. Main aim? To ensure that those in the public eye aren’t allowed to take themselves too seriously at all.

Bungo in the Back Lanes 2018

It’s that time again! Bungo in the Back Lanes is back for 2018, this Saturday, 1-5 pm. It’s one of the Southside’s greatest and longest running events.

Final preparations are underway, and the Bungo map is now available, showing just some of the events you can expect.

Meanwhile it take a lot of effort to make this happen, and if anyone wishes to help out in any way, may I suggest:

  • Set up your own stall in your back garden / lane.
  • Donations to the bottle stall
  • Donations to the tombola (contact bitbl@strathbungo.co.uk)
  • Stewarding on the day – there’s a briefing at 11.45 at the Society stall in the Marywood / Queen Square lane, or just show up any time and say hi, if you can spare us an hour with one of our fancy new orange jackets!
  • Set up (and take down) the gazebos – we start 9am (ish) in the Marywood / Queen Square lane, and pause for bacon rolls at some point

For more guidance see the FAQ on this site.

Glasgow City Consultation – Parks and Green Spaces

Hi folks

Please see the following link to a Glasgow City Council formal consultation on a Vision for Glasgow Parks and Green Spaces.

GGC Consultations.

I think we should be pushing for greater “city-wide” recognition for Queens Park – and much higher levels of maintenance.

Make your own suggestions direct to the Council, discuss them here, or pass them to me at chair@strathbungo.co.uk

Btw – there is a Consultation Hub and there are several other consultation of relevance – Transport, High Street etc. – at the same GGC Consultations link which may be of interest.

Strathbungo Window Wanderland – this Saturday! (25th)

A MAGICAL WALKING TRAIL TRANSFORMING STRATHBUNGO INTO A PLAYFUL OUTDOOR GALLERY!

FREE EVENT

ALL ARE WELCOME!

Please join us this Saturday 25th February, from 6-9pm.

Everyone is invited to wander around Strathbungo and enjoy residents’ window displays.

We hear rumours of bands in front rooms, a pop-up tattoo parlour, a human fruit machine, disco balls and bubble machines…. But the magic of Window Wanderland is that no one will actually know what’s happening until the night itself.

If you live in the area and are still to register, add your home to the online map. A ‘display’ could be as simple as a candle, book, fairy lights or image in a window. Or you could go all out and stage a performance in your front room or project onto your building! Simple or spectacular … it’s completely up to you. Anything goes! And if you need some inspiration or practical help, there’s a free drop-in workshop at the Tramway this Tuesday 21st February.

If you have any questions or would like to help spread the word about the event, please feel free to email us.

Consultation on Queens Park Arena

There are some changes in the running of Queen’s Park Arena (QPA), with a new company – Inhouse – being engaged to oversee a programme of events from 2017 (when the Arena escapes the clutches of Scottish Water).

Inhouse are running a consultation with local people to find out what would best meet our needs. Here’s what they say:

“Inhouse are a socially conscious company and appreciate what Queen’s Park Arena means to the people of the Southside. We are asking for your input in to developing the space as both a community asset and a viable venue. Upon Scottish Water vacating and once the land around the site has settled, we plan to launch a full bodied programme of events from April 2017.

To make sure you have your say, the following surveys will only take a few moments of your time and will help us to take local businesses, organisations and residents’ views in to account when developing the events at QPA. The survey link for local businesses, groups and organisations is here, and if you are a local resident you can also fill out a neighbours’ survey here.

If you have views on the Arena and how it could be used, do take a few minutes to have your say!

Langside Hall – Working Better for the Community

langside hallDo you know Langside Hall? Been inside or passed by it a thousand times, but don’t know much about its history? Well it is a rich one at that, and it is said to be a story of architectural excellence and survival!

It was first constructed on Queen Street in 1847 as the National Bank of Scotland. The beautiful and elegant building was designed by London architect, John Gibson, who stated after his first experience in Glasgow: “I was much gratified by the kindness shown to me in Glasgow, and surprised to see so many public monuments and all by the best sculptors.” (I think we can agree that this would still be said about Glasgow today!)
