STRATHBUNGO WINDOW WANDERLAND IS BACK… GET THE DATE IN YOUR DIARY AND YOUR THINKING CAP ON!

On Saturday 23 February 2019, Strathbungo Window Wanderland will once again transform the streets of Strathbungo into a spectacular outdoor gallery for all to enjoy.

As always, the success of last year’s event was down to the incredible efforts of residents and their wonderful window displays… From performances in front rooms to amazing projections onto buildings; mischievous monkeys, polka dot parties, disco balls, bubble baths, mythical creatures, intricate installations, pop up bingo halls and tattoo parlours, fantastical faraway lands and music filling the streets…. It was beautiful! We can’t wait to see what 2019’s event brings!

Simply create a window display in the front windows of your flat, house, business or shop. Please don’t feel intimidated! A ‘display’ could be as simple as a candle, book, fairy lights or image in a window. Or you could go all out and stage a performance in your front room! Simple or spectacular… it’s completely up to you.

Brighter Bungo seeks new organiser…

WANTED: rubbish person to organise Brighter Bungo !

The Strathbungo Society is seeking a new organiser for its regular community clear-up events, currently held on a Sunday 11am-1pm, five times a year.

Key tasks:
• Liaise with Strathbungo Society Committee and Glasgow City Council
• Encourage participation via posters & Society’s social media
• Organise a team of volunteers on the day

All equipment provided, and handover & induction offered.

Lesley McCallum

The Strathbungo Society was saddened to hear of the untimely death of Lesley McCallum last Sunday. Lesley was a stalwart supporter of the Strathbungo Society and former Committee member. Lesley organised and ran the Society Bottle Stall at every ‘Bungo in the Back Lanes’ event since its inception and also hosted many ‘Bungo at the Bells’ events at her home at the corner of Queen Square and Moray Place. Lesley’s help and encouragement of the Society’s work will be sorely missed and the Society passes on its sincere condolences to her husband David, brother Alistair and nephew Jack. Rest in Peace.

Putting the satire back into the Saltire

Where is all the biting Scottish Political satire these days? It seems to have just disappeared along with original Irn Bru and your online personal data. Well two of your Bungo neighbours have decided to do something about it!

Putting their years of experience to work the result is News Hacks. With a hysterical new script each month they deliver a fresh take on the news, those making the news, plus a smattering of side swipes at life in general in 21st century Scotland. If you watch, listen or read the news on any platform this is the show that puts it all into perspective. No one is immune from their spotlight.

Karen Townsend and Rikki Brown, who live in one of the garden streets, have set up a theatre production company, Bialystock and Brown. Main aim? To ensure that those in the public eye aren’t allowed to take themselves too seriously at all.

Bungo in the Back Lanes 2018

It’s that time again! Bungo in the Back Lanes is back for 2018, this Saturday, 1-5 pm. It’s one of the Southside’s greatest and longest running events.

Final preparations are underway, and the Bungo map is now available, showing just some of the events you can expect.

Meanwhile it take a lot of effort to make this happen, and if anyone wishes to help out in any way, may I suggest:

  • Set up your own stall in your back garden / lane.
  • Donations to the bottle stall
  • Donations to the tombola (contact bitbl@strathbungo.co.uk)
  • Stewarding on the day – there’s a briefing at 11.45 at the Society stall in the Marywood / Queen Square lane, or just show up any time and say hi, if you can spare us an hour with one of our fancy new orange jackets!
  • Set up (and take down) the gazebos – we start 9am (ish) in the Marywood / Queen Square lane, and pause for bacon rolls at some point

Stalls at Bungo in the Back Lanes 2018

Famous for its residents’ stalls selling everything from bric-a-brac and jewellery to homemade food and crafts, Bungo in the Back Lanes is an annual community festival that takes place in the lanes of Strathbungo.

The most exciting part of the festival is seeing which DIY stalls are set up on the day. Previous years have produced snail races, jumble stalls and a guess-the-sweeties-in-the-jar competition.

This year, #BitBL2018 is on 23rd June 2018.

Do you want to put up a stall?

Are you happy to host a stall or three in your garden?

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Residents are free to open up their garden or let someone else use it. Please let us know if you are happy for your garden to be used and we can help match you with a stallholder.
  • If you are not a resident and are planning on setting up a stall outside someone’s garden, please check first that they are happy for you to do so. Alternatively, there are several spots along the side lanes that are not directly outside people’s gardens.
  • If you are selling from your garden, make sure you have good signage on the lane letting people know what awaits them. Otherwise, nobody will know!
  • Do let us know where your stall is so we can add it onto our map.
  • If you are planning on selling food, you will need a food safety licence from the council. Please contact:
