Bungo at the Bells 2020-21

Hogmanay 2020 will be one of the strangest ever. With Tier 4 lock down, our usual street party simply can’t take place. Indeed all parties have been cancelled. However as a community we can still come together, safely.

Through the spring and early summer, we gathered together every Thursday on our doorsteps or gardens or windows to make a noise and mark the weekly NHS CHEER. To mark the closing of a year we won’t choose to remember, and to celebrate the hope of a Brighter 2021, Strathbungo can cheer out the old, cheer in the new in the same way at midnight on the 31st.

We can all come together, ensuring that we all have company to mark the the turning of the year. Make a noise, raise a glass if you feel inclined, and wave goodbye to 2020 at Bungo Bells on your Doorstep.

At 11.55pm on Thursday December 2020, lets all stand – socially distanced of course – on our doorsteps, or at our windows, to bring in the new year with bells and at least the first verse, and chorus, of Auld Lang Syne at midnight. Bring your own clock.

The lyrics are below, just in case anyone needs a reminder…

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

Chorus

We two have run about the hills,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

Chorus

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

Chorus

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

Chorus

Bungo at the Bells 2019-20

Come join the celebration of the New Year at Strathbungo’s traditional Hogmanay street party.

Parade through the streets around 11.30 to meet at the corner of Moray Place and Queen Square before the countdown, and stay for the music, to meet friends, have a drink and a dance. Bring your own refreshments. A little whisky and shortbread will also be available on the Society stall.

Lesley McCallum

The Strathbungo Society was saddened to hear of the untimely death of Lesley McCallum last Sunday. Lesley was a stalwart supporter of the Strathbungo Society and former Committee member. Lesley organised and ran the Society Bottle Stall at every ‘Bungo in the Back Lanes’ event since its inception and also hosted many ‘Bungo at the Bells’ events at her home at the corner of Queen Square and Moray Place. Lesley’s help and encouragement of the Society’s work will be sorely missed and the Society passes on its sincere condolences to her husband David, brother Alistair and nephew Jack. Rest in Peace.

Welcome 2017 at Bungo at the Bells

2017
Welcome in 2017 with music, festive fun and a countdown to the bells at Strathbungo’s annual Hogmanay Street Party on 31st December.

Gather outside 52 Marywood Square from 11:45pm.

If anyone is bringing children along, get them banging pan lids with wooden spoons as loudly as possible from either end of Strathbungo as you approach.

See you there!

Countdown to 2015 at Bungo At The Bells!

Welcome in the dawning of 2015 at the Strathbungo Society’s annual Hogmanay shindig, Bungo At The Bells.

The celebrations will begin with a parade from the junction of Titwood Road and Thorncliffe Avenue at 23.30. Please bring along Pots, pans, drums etc to make as much of a Hogmanay noise as possible!

People will then gather outside 53 Queens Square (corner of Queens Square and Moray Place) to welcome in the bells with music, mince pies, shortbread and mulled wine.

To help congestion, it would be really helpful if people could avoid parking at the end of Queen Square between 23.15 and 00.30.

See you there!

Get set to Bungo at the Bells

Bring your friends and family to Strathbungo’s annual Hogmanay street party!

For the 8th straight year, Strathbungo will be bringing in the New Year with our annual Hogmanay street party at and around the corner of Moray Place and Marywood Square.

Bungo at the Bells 2006 will kick off from two gathering points – 1 Moray Place and Vennard Gardens at Titwood Road – at around 11.30pm on Saturday, 31st December – and from there we’ll be rounding up revellers to make their way to the main site in time for the countdown to the Bells.

Come along and enjoy some music and merriment with your neighbours before setting off on your own rounds of first footing. And do by all means bring your friends and family from outside the community – show them how we do things, Bungo-style!

What’s a little rain…
In case of truly dreadful weather on the night, check back here for the latest information. And remember, even last year when Edinburgh cancelled their Hogmanay event, Bungo at the Bells went ahead – so dress warm and be ready to party!
