Brighter Bungo is back

Bungo in the Back Lanes will be on 22nd June this year. Can you help us get ready?

Please do your bit to ensure the lanes are in good nick for the event by coming along for a half hour on Sunday 2nd June between 11 and 1. Litter pickers, bin bags and high viz vests will be available outside the former Zinfandel on Nithsdale Road. Hope to see you there, but if you can’t make it could you have a look at your own stretch and spruce it up for the occasion?

Makers Market

Also, the Makers Market returns to BITBL this year in the lane between Marywood Square and Vennard Gardens, after being a great success last year. If you’re a local craftsperson and would like to sell your products on the day, please email Nicola at soapetc@btinternet.com or DM her on Facebook at @bungosoapetc to apply.

Nithsdale Road rubbish

Our stretch of Nithsdale Road is a mess.

Come along to a community meeting to discuss options for keeping the street cleaner.

Saturday 22nd January 2022, 11-11.30am, outside on street at the Pollokshaws Road end of Nithsdale Road. If the weather is bad, it’ll be at The Deep End instead.

Note this is a locally organised meeting, and not a Strathbungo Society event, though the Society will continue to help where it can.

Brighter Bungo – this Sunday!

Could you give us half an hour of your time to help with the Brighter Bungo back lanes clear-up?

The next clear-up is on Sunday 19th January between 11 – 1pm – find us outside the old Sammy Dows on Nithsdale Road. It’s a dead easy way to do your bit for the community you live in, plus get to know a few more neighbours. Kids love to get a grabber in their hands, so it’s a perfect family activity. The January clear up especially needs all hands on deck as we cope with the aftermath of disrupted New Year bin collections and the overflow that results from the festivities.

All equipment is provided.

Volunteers welcome

The Strathbungo Society and its events are run entirely by volunteers and we always welcome new people who want to help in any way they can. It’s important that volunteers are able to move on, so we are always looking for people to take on roles, from the small to the not-so-small, but also to develop new initiatives. Our Committee Meetings are open to all and advertised under the events sections of the bungoblog and Strathbungo Facebook page, so if you have ideas or want to know more do come along.

Current volunteering opportunities include:

  • Stewards for Window Wanderland 23rd February. We have stewards at larger events just in case anything goes wrong (stewards are briefed beforehand and we have a pick up point for lost children). Don a yellow bungo jacket for part of the evening and wander the streets. If interested either contact treasurer@strathbungo.co.uk or come to the Committee Meeting on 19th February
  • The Spring Fling. A small group is responsible for organising this event (co-ordination of craft stalls and events on the day) and would welcome someone else to join the team Contacts events@strathbungo.co.uk
  • The Bungo Committee. At our last AGM several people retired and were not replaced. We need more people on the Committee to keep going and have up to five vacancies. Do contact our Chair, Jane Carolann, at chair@strathbungo.co.uk or come along to our next meeting to see what is involved.
  • Newsletter delivery. Our distribution co-ordinator, Imelda Devlin, is always looking for new people to distribute our newsletter (3-4 times a year) whether to take on a street permanently or to act as a reserve when people are away.
  • Newsletter production. Our newsletter designer has indicated she would like to step down after many years. We now have a thriving editorial team who produce the copy so we are looking for someone who has layout skills.
  • Brighter Bungo. This is one of the easiest and most social ways to help with no commitments! Simply turn up on the day with your friends or family and help other volunteers keep our backlanes clean (all equipment provided). Next event will be probably be in April. Brighter Bungo is the name the Strathbungo Society gives to our regular community clean-up days. These take place quarterly in partnership with the Clean Glasgow campaign.

The next event is on January 8th 2017, 11:00-13:00. We’ll gather at the junction of Moray Place and Nithsdale Road.

Volunteers are given high-visibility vests, bin bags, gloves and litter pickers and encouraged to clean up litter and fly-tipped rubbish from the area’s streets and back lanes. Glasgow City Council’s Clean Glasgow campaign provides the equipment and removes the collected waste.

It’s a great hands-on way to improve the area we live in and a fantastic way to tackle the niggling issues that annoy anyone who lives in a busy, urban area.

We hope to see you there!
