Mining For Information

If recent conversations I’ve had are anything to go by, there’s a bit of misinformation circulating about the proposed ground consolidation works in the area. For those NOT directly affected by the works, who have not received a statutory notice, here’s a short breakdown of what will be happening:

  • Most of Regent Park Square and almost all even numbers of Queen Square will undergo ground consolidation works (have old mine workings infilled) over the next six months. Householders and the Council will split the cost of the works.
  • Queen Square will be worked on between mid-November and Christmas.
  • Regent Park Square will be worked on from January until Spring.
  • The turning circle at the Pollokshaws Rd end of Nithsdale Rd will be used as the batching plant. Machinery will be stored there, a site office established and cement processed.
  • There will be a great deal of pressure on street parking over the next few months as the roads are closed in turn.
  • Most of the workings will be filled from back gardens and lanes. Those in the odd numbers of Nithsdale Rd will therefore be affected by the works in the shared lane with Regent Park Square.
  • Pedestrian access, emergency access and access for deliveries will be maintained. Arrangements have been made with LES Cleansing to maintain the usual uplift arrangements.
  • The Council will reinstate all structures as they are, however the Strathbungo Society and local City Councillors are working with the Council to see if reinstatement can include some improvements. This will include upgrading all the back lanes.

Please contact the Society if you’d like to be involved in the discussions on reinstatement. Any queries about the works themselves should be directed to Brian Parr at GCC’s Housing Development Committee.

We’re All Going On A Blue-Bin Holiday

It appears in the recent refuse and recycling rejig, a few of our neighbours’ recycling bins have taken themselves off on little trips.

We are aware of one person who discovered several camping in her garden and one who hasn’t seen or heard from his (not even a postcard) for a month.

Please post here if your bin is missing or if you have a stray bin looking for a way home. This all means, of course, that we should whip out the black markers and label our bins before they grow legs and go wandering again.

BUNGOfest 2011

Thanks to everyone for making BUNGOfest 2011 a great day – to The Arches, the performers, the cafes and bars, the Strathbungo Society volunteers and not least to everyone who came along and made our first BUNGOfest such a success.

BUNGOfest today

What are you doing today?

As I look out, it’s raining, so why not use the excuse to stay dry, enjoy a coffee or cake and join The Arches and the Strathbungo Society in the microperformances we are putting on around Strathbungo?

There’s everything from kids’ workshops to stand-up, music and performance, so check out the times below.

Strathbungo Society AGM Tuesday 7.30pm

The AGM of the Strathbungo Society will be this Tuesday at 7.30pm in Queens Park Parish Church, 170 Queens Drive.

Come along to hear our plans for next year, to review what we have achieved this year, and to tell us what you want us to be doing – this is your society.

From 7.30 to 8pm we have managed to organise the lead for Glasgow City Council’s plans to consolidate mineworkings in the area to present and take questions; this should help those of you who received the public meeting invitation letters late this week, as I did.

Land and Environmental Services have also committed that a senior representative will be present to answer questions about the recent problems with refuse and recycling uplift.

We also need fresh talent to come in – a number of the committee are moving from the area and we will take nominations for Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. We can only do what we do because of volunteers, and without new offers last year this website would not have happened, and this weekend’s BUNGOfest would be no more than an idea. Please, please offer your time; we are proud of what we do, but would love to do more, and that can only happen with you.

Sharing Shawlands’ Future

Currently the text for the Shawlands Town Centre Action Plan is at its final stages and a draft document should be published later in October alongside a series of events to discuss and shape the final document. As it’s almost impossible to live in Strathbungo and not use the amenities in Shawlands, the plans will affect all of us and many local residents will have been involved on some level with the consultation. So where has all that consulting gone?

The Council have been trying to build up an extremely detailed picture of the issues affecting the centre and to this end have commissioned various pieces of research: –

It has contributed resources to:-

  • Setting up the Shawlands Business Association launched on 31 March 2011 (see Google – Shawlands Business Association+ Facebook)
  • Developing the Shawlands School Gate Project as a catalyst for bringing Shawlands Academy , community, businesses and young learners together  see www.smarterplaces.org
  • Securing new ‘café lighting for Skirving St’ (to be installed October)
  • Supporting the MARL Arts Project at the Shed and Southside Festival
  • Developing a vintage fair at The Shed (see below for the next event!)
  • Developing the ‘One Small Thing’ Initiative with SBA  http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/features/editor-s-picks/community-bid-to-put-the-heart-back-into-shawlands-1.1114215

In addition, the Council:-

The Draft Action Plan is very much about bringing people together, businesses working together to help build Shawlands as a destination, businesses working with customers to understand what they want and build loyalty.

It is about the Council, public sector partners, residents, customers and businesses working together to develop new ideas and reasons for people to visit Shawlands Town Centre. It is also about developing a programme for addressing a range of quite specific problems like crossing the road more easily, connecting to the park, improving the appearance and use of specific buildings and spaces.

It is about trying “Re-establishing Shawlands as, the Heart of the Southside”, by balancing the needs of place, people, businesses and sustainable living!

Planning A New Glasgow

I’ve had a flurry of e-mails lately from the people behind developing the future of Glasgow in general and the Southside in particular. As you may know, development policy and planning decisions in Glasgow are currently guided by the Glasgow City Plan (City Plan 2). At the end of next year, this is due to be replaced by a new document entitled the ‘Local Development Plan’ for Glasgow.

The LDP will include:-

  • A range of specific overarching policies about the future direction of the city
  • Specific policies and guidelines for Glasgow’s Southside and Town Centres.

As part of the process, the Council have just published a Main Issues Report (MIR) and will be consulting on this till the 12th December. Everyone is welcome to consider the MIR and provide the Council with their observations via the link below.

Rainbow Pre-School Bake Sale 4th October 11.30

Rainbow Pre-school, based in the old baptist church on Queens Drive, is holding what is hoped will be the first of many fundraising bake sales this Tuesday, 4th October. All are very welcome to come along and buy home baking provided by the teachers, parents and grandparents of the toddlers who attend. All funds raised will go towards buying toys for the nursery, paying for outings and providing fruit and veg for snack time.

BUNGOfest schedule of performers is here!

Here is the confirmed schedule for BUNGOfest on 8th October. You’ll have the chance to see many of the performers at more than one venue, so you can stay in your favourite bar or cafe, or even follow the action around.

Don’t forget the kids’ events, on the program below or see the post a couple down from here.
