Keeping Christmas Local

At The Strathbungo Society we’re evangelical about our local shops and services and the run up to Christmas is no exception. I’m expecting to be able to get almost all my Christmas shopping at shops within 2 miles of my house, keeping my cash in my community.

Doubtful you can do the same? Why not challenge our local knowledge? It’s amazing the number of amazing shops and suppliers there are in the area, so if you are looking for something specific and don’t know if anyone nearby will have it, ask by posting a comment here and we’ll see what we can do.

And if we fail? Well, there’s still a way you can keep some cash in the community even if you’re shopping online. easyfundraising is the easiest way to raise money for The Strathbungo Society. Shop with any of over 2,000 well known retailers listed on easyfundraising.org.uk and a percentage of what you spend is passed to The Strathbungo Society at no additional cost to you. Retailers include Amazon, M&S, Boden, House of Fraser, eBay and many more.

Simply register to support us today and click through. On average, each retailer will donate 5% of the cost of your shopping – and those donations soon mount up, especially at this time of year.

Christmas Shopping Night

The nights are drawing in, the Christmas ads have started, so why not wallow in the Christmas spirit and get your shopping started early and on your doorstep?

The Nithsdale Rd/Kildrostan St shops are hosting their annual Christmas shopping evening tomorrow, Wednesday 14th November. There’ll be carol singers, mulled wine, nibbles and great early-bird offers.

Most of the local businesses take part and if, like me, you struggle to get round local shops with toddlers in tow, you’ll appreciate the chance to browse at your leisure. Things kick off at 6.30pm and finish around 9.30. It’s a great opportunity to make the most of our fantastic local shops.

Shopping Night at Shawlands Primary

There will be an exclusive mix of Gifts, Cards, Jewellery, Pottery, Crafts, Homewares, Baby Items and much more!

7:30pm-9:30pm

Strathbungo – The Fabric of Heritage

This article about Strathbungo touches all the usual bases; the history, the architecture, conservation, parking, the back lanes, the railings, the role of the Strathbungo Society, artwork for the roundabout, and perhaps most topical of all as it happens, the effect of HMOs and guest houses on the quality of life in Strathbungo. The only thing it doesn’t seem to mention is the bins!

And the best bit? It appeared in Scottish Field magazine, thirty five years ago. Plus ça change. It was written by the eminent Scottish poet & journalist Maurice Lindsay, who passed away aged 90 in 2008. It contains several historical items of note that were new to me. Happy reading.

Thanks to Marie for finding and providing the article. I would love to hear from anyone else who can add their own reminiscences of days gone by in Strathbungo, and add to our burgeoning history collection.

Car set alight on Moray Place

If anyone saw anyone loitering or otherwise acting suspiciously around the entrance to Moray Place this morning at around 6.30am do contact the police. Someone set fire to a car just outside our house this morning and the fire brigade don’t think it was an electrical fault!!

Zero tolerance to criminals in Strathbungo!

Read more about the application and how to comment (plus a lively debate about the application in the comments section) on the blog post further down the page: https://bungoblog.com/general/backpackers-hostel-on-marywood-square/

The issue has also been added to the agenda for the AGM on Tuesday. Residents who received a notification letter have until Tuesday 30th October to comment.

12 March Street

In the 1950’s and 60’s I visited my grandmother each summer at 12 March Street.  She lived there until her death in the late 70’s. She was called Mrs Sarah Bryson.  Could anyone tell me what has happened to 12 March Street since it does not appear on Street View and there are many changes that are puzzling.Thank you

Jo

Sainsburys – it’s not local

Posters on the Bungo Blog seem to think that the arrival of Sainsbury is like the arrival of a new local shop and that they can influence what it stocks and how it behaves.

It is an outpost of a corporation that has no interest in being responsive to us or our community.  We are simply another dot on the map and a source of profit.

Sainsbury has a plan to create more and more of these ‘convenience’ stores around the country – opening two new ones every week.*

Competing with the other supermarket giants is hard but I suppose it’s easier to compete with small local shops, so they are stepping into that market with 440 ‘local’ stores so far, taking in over £1billion in sales.*

The operation of Sainsburys is a £21 billion business, comprising of a thousand UK stores, representing about 17% of UK supermarket business.  Profit after tax is around the half a billion mark.*

When Sainsburys make their profit, it makes no difference to the lives of people living in Glasgow.  The largest shareholder is a private investment company owned by the Qatari royal family.  They hold 25% of voting rights in the company.*

I am not advocating that we all knit our own clothes and grow all our own food but we must be thoughtful and realistic about what sort of companies we do business with and what the consequences are.

Buying your loaf or tin of beans in Sainsbury will do nothing to support the men and women retailers of the area who have served us well.  We are lucky to have a good selection of shops to find everything from Arborio rice to handmade ceramics.  Practically all of the list of desired products that was posted on the blog, can be bought within walking distance.  We all know that it does not take much to blight an area and boarded up shops can be the first sign.

The other claim is that somehow all the local businesses need a push to be better.  I honestly cannot think of any instance of bad service or poor quality from people I have known for nearly 15 years.

I would ask everyone to think for a moment if you really want to give your money to the faceless institutional investment shareholders of Sainsbury ?

Or should we instead continue to enjoy going into the local shops ?

Let’s buy our milk and mayo, fresh fruit and chops, greetings cards and flowers, newspapers and lotto tickets, olives and manchego, aspirins and coffee, organic bread and handmade sausages from people we know and chat to, who live here and who are interested in listening to what we want, so that their business and livelihood will survive.  By doing so, we will keep alive the community that we value so much in Strathbungo.

Backpacker’s Hostel On Marywood Square

A backpackers’ hostel in Hillhead

A planning application has recently been submitted to convert “offices” (the former dance school) at the ground and basement level of 23 Marywood Square into a hostel with 24 beds.

Full details can be found here: https://publicaccess.glasgow.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=externalDocuments&keyVal=M996V3EX0FZ00

The Society has in the past objected to sub-division of properties in the area and HMO licences as we feel these conflict with the Conservation Area appraisal. We also raised concerns over the running of the Queens Park Hotel. Once the Society has drafted a response I’ll post it on the blog (please see update below).

In the meantime, the planning application reference number is Ref. No: 12/01693/DC

If you wish to comment or object to the application, you might want to consider the impact on the conservation area, referring to the conservation area document, which is available online (PDF), amenities such as bins and car parking, the current city plan and its design guides for listed buildings and those in conservation areas which you can find here.

You can send a comment or objection via email to planning.representations@drs.glasgow.gov.uk or by post to Development and Regeneration Services, Development Control, 231 George St, Glasgow G1 1RX. The case officer is D Drummond. The comments and objections of neighbours will always count for more than those of a single organisation.

The deadline for neighbour comments is 30th October, so I suspect this subject will also be discussed at the Strathbungo Society AGM on Tuesday 23rd October, 7-9pm, Queens Park Church, 170 Queens Drive.

Update: If you wish to object, you can download and use this document as a starting point. It outlines the main grounds for objection and is based on the objection letter the Society has submitted: 23_Marywood_Objection_Letter

There is strength in numbers on issues like these. The Society has already been in touch with elected representatives and the community council to seek their support and has objected to the plans as an organisation but neighbour objections do carry great weight.
