Public Art

sainsbugsThe Society is always on the lookout for ways to make our neighbourhood even better.

Inspired by other public art projects, we’ve been wondering whether the Society and Pollokshields Heritage could approach Sainsbury’s to think about commissioning an art work on the large (dull grey) window that faces onto its car park?

How about an etching type-thing that shows the outlines of local architecture?  I’m sure there’s more creative solutions. Anything to enliven what is a “dead” window.

What would you like to see there? Are ther other areas ripe for artworks in the Bungo?

Skate Park For The Southside?

skatePlans are afoot to create an urban sports park under the M74 at Eglinton Toll. Sounds like a great use for an otherwise tricky site and could be a great addition to the neighbourhood.

You can read the draft proposal here: Introducing_GUS_Draft10d

Glasgow Urban Sports, the organisation behind the proposals, is keen to consult with local communities and potential users of the park. They have also set themselves the challenge of opening in 2014 to coincide with Commonwealth Games fever.

What do you think of the plans and would you use the skatepark?

Bin Rakers No More

Bin Raker

You may have noticed the increased presence, and persistence, of the bin rakers of late. In my case, I am fed up of rebagging my rubbish every fortnight before the binmen come, especially when it gets ripped open again during the night. However things reached a nadir last week when I left an electrical cable running out under my garage door for the use of a builder working in the back lane. The rakers cut the cable at both ends and made off with 20m of electrical cable, value probably little more than 50p. In doing so they pulled as much cable under the door as they could, ripping the electrical socket off the wall and leaving mains cabling dangling dangerously in my garage, and cost the builder £20 – it was his cable.

It is time to fight back, albeit legally. I have spoken to the police at Gorbals Police Station (in particular PC Ali Martin) who are aware of the problem, and are keen to identify the culprits. While they are planning plain clothes patrols in the lanes in the next few weeks, we can also help. We need to do more than just move them along, and if you do not wish to intervene, call the police on 101 (the new non emergency number, not 999) immediately. If they have someone free they will come round and try to catch them in the act.

If you feel more proactive, the issue is one of identification; this is best achieved by two collaborating witnesses, and photographic evidence to identify the individual. I almost got a photo of the protagonists last week and regret not doing so. While I have sympathy for those less fortunate than ourselves, it stops when they begin causing criminal damage, and this needs to be nipped in the bud. Happy snapping, but of course, no taking the law into your own hands. It just isn’t the Bungo way.

Sammy Dow’s Planning Application – Still time to object before Friday 28th June

You still have time before Friday the 28th, to put in an objection to the plans by Spirit Pub Group to create a drinking and smoking area in the back garden of the tenement at 69 Nithsdale Road.  They also want to completely change the frontage of this B-Listed building, losing traditional features and adding ugly metal roller shutters.

The intrusion of people on a 2 meter high deck looking into the homes and gardens of residents in Nithsdale Road, Regent Park Square and Moray Place is unacceptable.  There will also be the noise and disturbance on the traditionally quiet side of residential homes – year round.

You can see the plans by visiting the Glasgow City Council Online Planning website :

If you would like some pointers on issues that the planners will consider to be ‘material’ or relevant have a look at this document :

Send your objection via email to the Planning Department at :

planning.representations@drs.glasgow.gov.uk

It is important that people in Strathbungo make their feelings about this development proposal clear.  If one business gets permission then others could follow and the residential amenity, which makes this a great place to live and bring up a family, will be lost.  The proposal for a hostel in Marywood Square was thankfully rejected and community objections were an important part of that process so please take a moment to respond to this equally disruptive plan.

No Hostel For Marywood

The City Council’s planning review committee met this morning to decide on the appeal against the planning application refusal for the proposed hostel at 23 Marywood Square.

The committee voted unanimously to uphold the planning department’s decision to refuse planning consent, citing City Plan 2, RES 15 and the conservation area appraisal.

Four objectors managed to attend the review meeting, including the chair of the Society. The applicant was also present.

BITBL anecdotes for the newsletter?

While this year’s Bungo in the Back Lanes is still fresh in everyone’s mind, does anyone have any stories they want to tell about it for the next newsletter? Anything from a short message with a little piece of news or a report on how something went to a feature-length article would be welcome. Also, pics are always good. I managed to get some myself this year, but I didn’t catch everything. Feel free to comment below or send an e-mail. Thanks much!!

Bungo in the Backlanes 2013 pictures

Wow! What a beautiful day it ended up being yesterday. Bungo at the Backlanes went well and was absolutely packed with people. The lanes were crowded with all kinds of activities, tea gardens, home cooking and things for sale. Neighbourhood volunteers stepped up once again and got the beer tent and Strathbungo Society gazebos built up and taken down, along with running the stalls, providing health and safety support and keeping the event organised.

I’ve uploaded some Bungo in the Backlanes 2013 pictures to a set associated with my Flickr account and added them to the Strathbungo Flickr group. Anyone else who has pics: if they’re on Flickr, maybe add them to the Strathbungo group? If they’re elsewhere online, maybe provide a link below or link to them in a new post?

Everything I took is either a crowd/group shot or taken with permission. However, if someone sees themselves or a family member in one of the pics and doesn’t want it online, just let me know, and I’ll delete it. Thanks!

Bungo In The Back Lanes – all systems go!

The gazebo crew have been hard at work (fuelled by Gusto breakfast rolls), the rain is easing, the sun is currently shining but whatever the weather Bungo In The Back Lanes is always on.

The lanes are looking clean and tidy but if you’ve forgoteen, please put your bins in your garden. The first hardy stallholders have started setting up shop and the neighbourhood is waking up.

Thanks, as ever, to our fantastic volunteers and the team of organisers. This is definitely the first year we’ve had time to blog on the day of the event! Do pop by the Society stall to say hello and, above all, enjoy yourselves!
