Strathbungo residents will be aware of recent proposals to introduce large glass recycling bins within the community. As this siting issue has come up before, when recycling bins were placed at the Queens Park Gates (near Brodies & the bike racks) I wanted to share a brief piece of local history that may be helpful for everyone to know.
In the mid-1990s, large recycling banks were installed at this same location. At the time, they became the subject of repeated complaints from local residents and park users due to noise (particularly glass tipping) bottles being used as weapons, frequent broken glass in front of gates, litter, and general nuisance. These concerns were raised formally with the Council and discussed over a period of time.
Following reviews involving the Planning and Cleansing Departments, the Council concluded that the site was unsuitable for this type of recycling provision. As a result, the large bins were removed and relocated elsewhere. This outcome was confirmed in written correspondence at the time, and it resolved the issues being experienced by the local community.
Given this history, residents of Strathbungo should be concerned about proposals to return large glass recycling bins to a site that was previously found to be problematic. The circumstances around the location have not materially changed, and the same issues are likely to arise again and probably be now exacerbated due to recycling uptake.

Great post – park entrance used to be awful. However, not sure the Council were proposing this as a site for glass recycling, rather the (wider) Pollokshaws Road end of Regent Park and Queen squares
The council were suggesting at the ends of Regent Park and Queens Square, which residents were not keen on. The Society suggested the park gates, but councillors thought it wasn’t a good idea.
