Do you know where this is now?

It may have escaped the watchful eye of the Bungo Blog but since lockdown a musical event has taken place every Saturday evening on Titwood Road. Following the initial Thursday “Clap for the NHS”, all of the neighbours on Titwood Road from the corner of Pollokshaws Road to the corner of Thorncliffe Gardens/Waverley Street got together in an attempt to soften the blow of isolation.
Those residents who can play a musical instrument (and/or sing) entertain the others who are more than willing listeners during an historic, unique and never to be forgotten period in the lives of all of us. All of this is enhanced by the presence of one of the neighbours Grant Parfery who is a professional photographer. During each concert Grant has captured the atmosphere in photographs and videos which have come to the notice of the Royal photographer, the Daily Record and Glasgow Live.
Those in attendance vary in age from toddlers to octogenarians. The occasion has become one to savour and eagerly anticipate for all of us. We share glasses of wine, beer and whisky whilst keeping each other good company at distances well in excess of the 2 metres recommended. Friends and relatives have heard about the concert by word of mouth and are adding to the friendly atmosphere by their attendance albeit still maintaining a safe distance. The event takes place – whilst Lockdown is with us – each Saturday evening between 6.30 pm and approximately 8.00 pm. Images can be obtained from the Facebook page of Grant Parfery.

I would like to make you aware of the wonderful , thoughtful and amazing job the staff at piatto (Italian street food takeaway) and the community of Shawlands are doing.
They have started a pay-it-forward scheme for people to pre-pay for meals which all NHS staff can come down and get some tasty food to thank them for the amazing job they are doing on the frontline!
They have had an overwhelming response (while following all government guidelines in the current climate) and have over 50 donated meals !
They have also opened it up to anyone who is out of a job and maybe struggling to eat. They just today delivered pizza to the children’s hospital for the staff to enjoy. Furthermore they are collecting for local food banks which has also been very successful.
Being a small business themselves and under the pressures of this horrific situation they are doing everything in the power to help their community and show thanks to our frontline workers.
I believe they deserve some gratitude themselves for doing such an amazing and commendable job!!

Hi,
is there such a thing as a Strathbungo Trail, giving a route outlining places of interest and historical buildings? I’ve recently seen one for Pollockshields and Govan.
Recently the collection of purple and brown bins has been sporadic. Do we know why? Can the Society talk to the Council about this? Thanks
When I first moved into Marywood Square 4 years ago I thought that the lane running up the back of my tenement was a brilliant opportunity to get some wild flowers growing, so I sowed some seeds. They came to nothing. I was busy, new flat etc, I didn’t really give it much thought. The next Spring I took it a bit more seriously and I and a close neighbour both sowed seeds. Same result – nothing! But this time I realised why. The lane had been sprayed by weed killer – or so it appeared to me by the burned vegetation. So last year I gave seed sowing a miss only to see a couple of new plants in my garden killed as weed killer drifted through the railings.
I’m now getting more and more aware, and concerned that we have a serious environmental problem and it seems that globally we’re in the throws of a sixth mass extinction of species (manmade this time?) including a major threat to insects which are at the bottom of a food chain that maintains birds and animals and are crucial as pollinators. Could we in Strathbungo not play a small part in countering this by challenging the Council, who I’m presuming spray the lanes with weedkiller, and consciously try and turn our lanes into a haven for wild flowers insects and birds. It seems to me that this could be a very positive experience for the children in the area who with proper parental encouragement and support might enjoy helping bring wild flowers into the lanes and learning about them and the wildlife they support. I’ll contact the Council (again) and this time try and find out just why they think it’s a good idea to spray weedkiller. It seems strange to me as they don’t seem to take any responsibility for any other kind of “maintenance” in the lanes. Would other residents, and maybe the Strathbungo Society itself be interested in trying to get the spraying stopped and encouraging wild life into our area?
Reclaim the Strathbungo Fountain
Yes, there was a Strathbungo Fountain. I’m sure it was Victorian, as made of metal and was substantially built. I don’t know the dimensions but would estimate (from memory) that it was approx. 10-12 ft high on a circular base of slightly larger dimensions.
It was situated on a roundabout opposite the old red telephone box nr. Sammy Dows and The New Anand Restaurant. I am sure it was still there about 20 years ago when I lived in Pollokshields. Did anyone see it being dismantled? Where did it finally end up? I have searched and searched (google uk) and cant find anything relating to it. I’m sure there must be someone, perhaps a Glasgow Council dept., who could throw some light on this. Again, a photo of it from someone would be an ideal start.
