Strathbungo Steakhouse?

A planning application has been submitted for the former Global Video site on the corner of Pollokshaws Road and Titwood Road but this time it actually looks pretty good.

In the past the Society has objected to numerous development plans which mainly involved building high-rise blocks of flats on the site.

The new plans keep the exterior and height of the building fairly unchanged and, as the building has been empty for some time, it would be great to see a thriving business there. Have a look at the plans and let us know what you think.

A suburban-style chain restaurant? Not ideal, IMHO, unless we want to extend the MacDonald’s/ KFC area (which I’m not a fan of) toward Strathbungo. I think that something 2-5 stories in height, consistent with the tenements or slightly higher, would be ideal. Not a highrise and not a 1-storey building, either. Low rise development in a neighbourhood this close to a city centre denotes an industrial use, and I have the impression that the 1-storey buildings that we still have here are relics from when this area was at the edge of town. I don’t think they’re necessarily something that we need to perpetuate. Most of the one-storey buildings currently in the neighbourhood are eyesores, including the one currently at Titwood and Pollokshaws. And, we’re already well served by restaurants.

I’m not sure if others would agree. I am pretty new to the area. It’s the higher density in this area that makes it urban and a good place to live. If the gap between Strathbungo and the Shawlands got filled in by higher density development, I’d think that would be a good thing. Not a highrise, mind you, just something more in keeping with the rest of Pollokshaws Road.

I guess I just don’t think that a one-storey building in that location is necessarily ideal. The one that’s there now certainly isn’t a jewel of the south side.

On the other hand, any functional, in-use building would be better than what’s there now.
