The owners of Sammy Dows (Spirit Pub Company) have lodged a Full Planning Application with Glasgow City Council for “Internal and external alterations including frontage alterations, installation of canopies and formation of rear access deck (associated with external seating area for public house)“. The first time adjoining neighbours – only 67-57 Nithsdale Road, 1-6 Moray Place and 38-42 Regent Park Square – heard of this was on Saturday 18 May 2013, when they received a Neighbour Notification Notice. It appears that comments are required to be filed by Thursday 24 May 2013.
The application, is here – with drawings and key dates etc.:
That this is the first time that near-neighbours have been made aware of an application that was first recived by the Council on 14 February 2013, validated the following month and then (quietly?) advertised on 3 May 2013, perhaps shows the way the applicant wishes to play this: strictly by-the-book without any local pre-consultation.
Hopefully, it will be discussed this evening at the monthly meeting of the Strathbungo Society.

This is just my opinion, but I’m not dead set against it. It would be nice if there was another place with outdoor seating in the neighbourhood. Mulberry Street fills up on nice days. Sammy Dow’s is a good pub, too. They’ve got real ale on tap, and they’ve always been nice when I’ve been in there. If they can handle it as well as Mulberry Street does, then why not?
Can I advise people who want to comment on this application that the deadline being listed as the 24th actually means BEFORE the 24th so the deadline is actually THURSDAY THE 23RD.
I had this clarified by a planning officer over another objection which was deemed outside the consultation period.
get in! a beer garden for strathbungo. Hope the nimbies have ear plugs!!
Thanks for you timely advice Fiona. Everything about it seems a bit….sneaky!
@Fiona MacKinnon
Unlike a hostel, if the pub followed the same rules as Mulberry Street, the noise outside would end at 9:00 p.m. Also, Sammy Dows is an established local business, not some dodgy bloke who thinks it’s a cool to show up at the Strathbungo Society AGM in leather and blue tinted shades and act like a douche. Just sayin’.
Sammy Dow’s is part of the Spirit Pub Company. They own or manage around 1400 pubs in the UK under seven different brands. Revenue in 2012 was £760 million. It is not a local business.
