Documenting the Laneways

The photos are numbered. Use this key to find the one you’re looking for. There’s also a copy of it in the Flickr set.

So… I volunteered to take baseline pictures of the laneways at the Strathbungo Society meeting before last, then forgot about it when it inconveniently rained for a couple of days straight right afterwards. I was reminded when I skimmed the minutes before last Monday’s meeting. It’s finally done. Yay! If you click on the key to the left, it will take you to the photo set on Flickr. Feel free to download the laneway photos or use them however you’d like. They’re licensed ‘Attribution Creative Commons’ and should be downloadable (If not, let me know and I’ll figure out how to fix it).

Strathbungo Steakhouse?

A planning application has been submitted for the former Global Video site on the corner of Pollokshaws Road and Titwood Road but this time it actually looks pretty good.

In the past the Society has objected to numerous development plans which mainly involved building high-rise blocks of flats on the site.

The new plans keep the exterior and height of the building fairly unchanged and, as the building has been empty for some time, it would be great to see a thriving business there. Have a look at the plans and let us know what you think.

Glorious Gardens Show

Saturday sees one of my favourite events of the Glasgow summer – the New Victoria Gardens Summer Show.

I might be biased as a plotholder but it’s a fantastic day out for all the family and this year the NVG Allotment Association can boast two prizes – one for Glasgow’s most sustainable allotment and the coveted St Mungo’s Trophy awarded to the best allotment in the whole city.

Come through the green door in the wall to glimpse this little oasis in the middle of the city. Marvel over how lush the wet weather has made it, gasp in wonder that any produce managed to grow at all and enjoy great baking and crafts with the opportunity to buy some of the prize-winning produce to take home.

And do pop in to plot 22 (not prize-winning but much-loved) and say hello!

Bungo Gardeners Wanted

Enthusiastic but thwarted gardener? Fancy growing fruit and veg but don’t have the space at home? Local not-for-profit food shop Locavore has adopted the planters at Pollokshields West Station and will be filling them with strawberries, rhubarb and other edible delights over the coming weeks.

The first planting session was tonight and the next is from 6.30pm on Wednesday29th August. Just turn up ready to work and look forward to admiring the fruits of your labours whenever you catch the train.

Brighter Bungo!

The next Brighter Bungo clean up will take place from 10.30am on Saturday 8th September 2012, meeting at the junction of Moray Place and Nithsdale Road.

Volunteers are given high-visibility vests, bin bags, gloves and litter pickers and encouraged to clean up litter and fly-tipped rubbish from the area’s streets and back lanes. GCSS, Clean Glasgow campaign provides the equipment and removes the collected waste, this time from two different collection areas in Strathbungo.

It’s a great hands-on way to improve the area we live in and a fantastic way to tackle the niggling issues that annoy anyone who lives in a busy, urban area. Looking forward to seeing you all on 8th September!

Can’t wait until next month to sort out those niggles? If you’ve got a smartphone, Glasgow City Council and LES have launched a new phone app to make it easier for people to quickly report issues like missed bin collections, fly-tipping and graffiti. It can be downloaded for free for Apple and Android users.

As well as asking the Council to help, there’s always more residents can do to help keep the area tidy. If you have bulk items the council takes weeks to collect them, far better if you have transport to take bulk items to the recycling centre yourself. Polmadie depot has been recently revamped, is less than ten minutes away by car and it is much quicker to DIY than wait for the Council!

And it might be stating the obvious but one way to avoid the bin men leaving emptied bins in rows at the end of the lanes is to make sure both your bins and back gate are clearly numbered so they can be put back outside their rightful home.

Telephone Tower Trouble

Residents up the road in Pollokshields are preparing to march into planning battle for the fourth time over the same issue. What’s the campaign? A planning application to install a telephone mast and transmission disc on a building most Bungoans will see every day – the former church and current nursing home/nursery on the corner of Shields and Nithsdale Rd.

You can find out more on the history of George Rowan’s 1878 building here

With Doors Open Day around the corner and architectural heritage on everyone’s minds, the campaign are hoping to encourage people to join their fight by signing this letter: Church_Tower_Mast.

Strathbungo Society August Meeting

Reinvigorated and raring for action after our post-BITBL summer break, the Society will be meeting to catch up and plan for the year ahead this Monday 20th August, at 7.30pm in The Bungo on Nithsdale Road.

Agenda and last minute to follow but hot topics are likely to be the Great Bin Conundrum (Dougie Gellan of LES at the Council will be on hand to answer queries), our forthcoming AGM, guerrilla gardening projects, and the final tallies from Bungo In The Back Lanes.

Fancy getting involved or bringing your own agenda to the table? Just come along – we’ll be in the front den room – or post a comment and we’ll add it to our agenda.

Beginning Tai’ Chi at Queen’s Park Church

Tai’ Chi is a Chinese exercise regimen that improves strength, balance, posture and concentration. It has two components: a defined set of movements, or form, and push hands, which is done with a partner. Tai’ Chi was first developed as training for the martial arts, a type of shadow boxing. Today, it’s a an art and a discipline in and of itself.

Tai’ Chi is zero impact and is safe and beneficial for people of all all ages. I first used it as a way to regain strength and muscular balance after being badly injured in a car accident many years ago. It’s excellent for both healing and for physical fitness.

For anyone who has been wanting to try – or revisit – Tai’ Chi, here’s the perfect opportunity. There are affordably priced beginners Tai’ Chi classes starting right here in our neighbourhood in a couple of weeks:

  • Starting Monday, 27th August
  • 7.30pm – 9.30pm
  • Queens Park Church Of Scotland (170 Queens Drive)
  • £6 waged / £4 unwaged

The classes will be taught by Glen Williams of Five Winds. He can be contacted at williams.glen (at) yahoo.co.uk or at 07891760744.

For those who prefer a daytime class, there’s also this one:

  • Starting Wednesday 29th August
  • 10:00 am – 11:00 am
  • Toryglen Community Hall (199 Prospecthill Circus)
  • £3.50 per class

That class will also be taught by Glen. You can book a place on 0141 569 1031 or by e-mailing toryglen.community (at) gmail.com.

Don’t mess with Strathbungo

Having recently returned from a long trip to the US I was immediately reminded by the amount of litter and other rubbish in the streets in Glasgow. The US (at least the parts which we visited) appeared almost litter free promoting a sense of pride in the area and of security. Not only were the streets cleaned, and bins emptied but one got the strong impression that littering was not only a criminal offence but a huge social no-no – akin to peeing on a gravestone.

In contrast many parts of Glasgow however (including Strathbungo) appears plagued with litter and people’s household rubbish in the street. Part of the problem is the Council’s policy of removing everyone’s rubbish left in the street which just encourages people to leave more not bothering to take their own rubbish to the nearby bin or the recycle centre. But there appears also a sense of resignation to the problem with a reluctance to challenge people who leave their rubbish in the street – for I can’t believe for a moment that people only litter in the dead of night when no one else is looking.

To help clean up Strathbungo and to keep it clean let’s all commit to a) not littering or leaving our rubbish in the street or around the public bins and b) challenging anyone who does so. Just a polite, ‘sorry mate, but you seem to have forgotten this’ would do.

Don’t mess with Strathbungo.
