Weather Watching

So, through interlaced fingers and bated breath, the Society has had a first peek at the long-range forecast for Saturday and the weather runes currently say…

sunshine and showers, temperatures in the mid-teens.

We’ll keep our eyes on it as the weather is decidedly changeable just now and, remember, Bungo In The Back Lanes always goes on, whatever the weather.

Volunteers last year will remember erecting gazebos in torrential rain, only for the clouds to clear and the sun to appear for most of the event. We live in hope!

The Countdown to Bungo In The Back Lanes 2013 starts here!

Entering its 13th year, Strathbungo’s favourite community festival Bungo In The Back Lanes is set to light up the area on Saturday 22nd June from 1-4pm.

Famous for its residents’ stalls selling everything from bric-a-brac and jewellery to homemade food and crafts, Bungo In The Back Lanes will take place in the gardens and lanes between Nithsdale Road and Vennard Gardens.

Eye-catching stalls and features at this year’s festival include: The Big Bungo Tea and Coffee Garden; New Victoria Allotments plant sale; Babu Bombay Street Kitchen; Happy Holistics offering massages; new local food promoters Locavore; Glasgow City Council’s food recycling stall; architectural walk of the area; Childrens’ Garden led by Merry Go Round; Tea Garden with the Viennese Ensemble plus the beer garden and live music from local bands.

The most exciting part of the festival is seeing which DIY stalls are set up on the day. Previous years have produced snail races, jumble stalls and guess-the-sweetie-in-the-jar competitions. People are free to open up their garden or bring a table full of wares they’d like to sell down to the lanes on the day.

THURSDAY 6 JUNE 2013 – FINAL DATE FOR OBJECTIONS TO SAMMY DOWS PLANNING APPLICATION

Glasgow City Council has noted that objections to the Spirit Pub Group’s application for Full Planning & Listed Building Consent for Sammy Dows, will be accepted up to Thursday 6 June.  You can make an objection either online or by writing to Development & Regeneration Services, 231 George Street, Glasgow G1 1RX.

The proposals – which include a raised 2.2 m (7ft) decking area for drinking and smoking to the rear and adjacent to the private, residences and gardens of Nithsdale Road, Moray Place and Regent Park Square – are damaging to the area’s amentiy and contrary to several City Council planning policies.

It is important that neighbours use this opportunity to formally object to the proposal, not least as it could, if won, be used by other local establishments to pursue the same (ie intrusion into private, residential amenity of our back courts, gardens and homes).

FinalPlanObjections-Sammy Dows gives full details of key planning policies relevant to this application. Compotent objections must refer to key planning policies and be in your own words.

New Victoria Gardens Plant Sale Sunday 2nd June 2-4pm

New Victoria Gardens is hosting an early summer plant sale this Sunday.

Accessed through a mysterious door in a wall on Glenapp St, off Albert Drive, the NVG allotments are a real hidden treasure of the Southside – a green oasis in the concrete jungle.

Open to the public only a couple of times a year, this is a rare opportunity to look around this secret garden and benefit from the horticultural expertise of plot holders, with the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of plants and produce and enjoy the legendary home baking in the NVG tearoom.

The sale is on from 2-4pm and it is free to enter.

BUNGO IN THE BACK LANES 2013 – Prizes for Bottle Stall, Tombola and Raffle, Volunteers to Assist on the Day, Home Baking

If its not already in your diary a timely reminder that Saturday 22nd June 2013 the place to be is the annual Bungo in the Back Lanes held between 1-4pm, in the back lanes between Nithsdale Road and Vennard Gardens in Strathbungo. A warm welcome (if not dry!) will be extended to you all.

Full details of the day can be found at www.bungoblog.com

Fancy helping put on Glasgow’s “best local community event”? The Strathbungo Society is always looking for extra volunteers on the big day to help us get things ready and pack things up.

Victims of the success of the event, we’ve found ourselves with a smaller volunteer pool than ever this year because everyone wants to enjoy the day and set up their own stall. Sound familiar? You can help before and after the event doing any of the following:

•Putting up (and later taking down) gazebos, moving tables and chairs, putting out A Frames etc: Meet at 9.30am on Saturday at 26 Marywood Square or follow the noise in the back lanes. For packing up, come to the Society stall at 4pm.
•Baking: We’d love donations of home baking for our tea garden on Marywood and Queen Lane. Just drop it off on the day.
•Prizes: We’re taking donations of prizes for the tombola, bottle stall and raffle. Drop them off at 53 Queen Sq or send me an e-mail if you want them picked up
•Making space: Not holding a stall yourself? We have several stall holders looking for a pitch. They will squeeze in wherever they can on the day but if you’ve got a great garden or yard you think could be used by someone else, get in touch and we can send them your way.

We look forward to seeing you all on the day.

PLANNING APPLICATION FOR SAMMY DOW’S (INCL. REAR DECKED SEATING AREA)

The owners of Sammy Dows (Spirit Pub Company) have lodged a Full Planning Application with Glasgow City Council for “Internal and external alterations including frontage alterations, installation of canopies and formation of rear access deck (associated with external seating area for public house)“.  The first time adjoining neighbours – only 67-57  Nithsdale Road, 1-6 Moray Place and 38-42 Regent Park Square – heard of this was on Saturday 18 May 2013, when they received a Neighbour Notification Notice. It appears that comments are required to be filed by Thursday 24 May 2013

The application, is here – with drawings and key dates etc.:

That this is the first time that near-neighbours have been made aware of an application that was first recived by the Council on 14 February 2013, validated the following month and then (quietly?) advertised on 3 May 2013,  perhaps shows the way the applicant wishes to play this: strictly by-the-book without any local pre-consultation.

Hopefully, it will be discussed this evening at the monthly meeting of the Strathbungo Society.

SHAWLANDS ACADEMY LIGHTING PROJECT @ THE LIGHTHOUSE

The Shawlands Academy Lighting Project – part of the Shawlands Town Centre Action Plan – is being showcased at the Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture+Design. Shawlands students worked with lighting designers to create a project to allow students to digitally project artworks on to the school’s facade; reinforce Shawlands Academy as a key institution in the town centre; and brighten up one of the key gateways into Shawlands.

This animated film tells you all about it:  http://www.ads.org.uk/smarterplaces/news/shawlands-academy-on-the-noticed-board

Shawlands Academy Lighting Project was funded by Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council.
