Nithsdale pavements update

Teresa Mooney, Allison Hussain and Nick Kempe from the Strathbungo Society met with a representative from the roads section of Land and Environment Services (LES) on Thursday 25th September about the Nithsdale Rd and Street pavements resurfacing (see previous post on this issue).

We walked over the three pavements that had been resurfaced pointing out a large number of defects including places where the work had not been finished leaving a rough surface and holes. We pointed out that most stanks and other coverings to utilities to flats and businesses are now below the pavement level and many are now impossible to open, identified a section of pavement that had been missed because tree roots were protruding and to tubs and other street furniture belonging to local businesses that are now sealed into the pavement. Local business owners also pointed out that the contractor had left the pavements before they had set and removed barriers and this had resulted in people walking over the wet surface leaving footprints and bringing tar in shops and pubs.

Nithsdale Rd an Nithsdale St pavement resurfacing

In mid-August pavements on Nithsdale Street and Road were resurfaced with black tarmac. This was done to a very poor standard and seems to have no account of the Council’s policies for Conservation Areas. As a result the Strathbungo Society Committee wrote to the Council to express our concerns, state that we thought this was a lost opportunity to improve the local streetscape and to ask for a way forward (the letter is pasted below). The Council has now agreed to a site meeting on Thursday 25th September to look at the standard of the work undertaken and discuss the issues that we have raised. We will post an update following this meeting.

Meantime the Society has contacted a number of local residents who we know have expertise in architecture or planning conservation who may be able to give examples of good practice we could cite at the meeting. If you think you could contribute to this please contact me at nickkempe@tinyworld.co.uk

Green Light for Sammy Dow’s

SammyDowApplicForm

The planning application to create a rear door for Sammy Dow’s,  change the frontage and knock a new entrance gate through the boundary wall, has been given the green light by both planning officers and the Planning Committee.  The window planned for the back has thankfully been dropped.

It has been a monumentally long wait – since April – but it was decided by councillors of the Planning Committee to grant the application on the 19th of August.

Prior to this, nobody on the planning team would even confirm whether it would go to committee. Then when it was recommended by planners and passed to the committee, none of the many objectors was informed of the date and time. This means that Strathbungo residents were denied the chance to go to witness the process. This is despite many requests to the department for notification of the date.

The Planning Portal on Glasgow City Council’s website still lists it as “pending decision” which is an unacceptable delay in letting people know about an important planning application.  I only got access to the report which gives the details yesterday, the 8th of September.

The good news is the fact that councillors seem to have understood and shared our concern that this was really a new entrance/exit to the pub and that the deck was intended as a place for people to smoke. Therefore a stringent condition was attached, by councillors, to the permission :

“For the avoidance of doubt and in the interest of clarity the fire exit to the rear shall be used as a fire exit only and a break glass system used at all times hereafter and shall not be used for any other purpose, unless otherwise agreed in writing by the Planning Authority”

This clause means unless there is a fire in the building (which we would sincerely hope there never is) the door at the back of the pub should never be open. If it ever is, we must report it to the Planning Department immediately.

Although there will be disappointment at the fact the plan has been granted approval, this condition is the result of strong co-ordinated objection from residents. It proves it’s worth the cost of a stamp or the click of a ‘send’ button.

I would like to thank everyone who lives in the area who helped with the objections.  Thank you must also go to our MSP Nicola Sturgeon, Cllr MacLeod, Cllr Meikle and Cllr Raja who made their views known and supported residents.

Does This Cat Have a Home?

IMG_1512This calico cat has recently taken over a ground floor under-the-wood-board property in our back garden and given birth to a litter of adorable kittens. She doesn’t look like a stray, does she?  She seems to be healthy and well fed, but understandably, she won’t let anyone near her babies. She looks young herself. Did she perhaps escape from someone’s house?  She’s obviously not been fixed, but she doesn’t exactly seem feral. If she has a home, then please let us know. We’ll be feeding her and waiting to see if she gets any friendlier. If she’s your cat, please e-mail news-atsign-strathbungo.co.uk

Plans unveiled for new skate park at M74 flyover at Port Eglington

Park Life, Southside style

Plans for a new urban skate park at the M74 flyover at Port Eglington have been unveiled for a  currently empty site adjacent to the main route from Strathbungo (and points south) to Glasgow city centre.  Drawing on inspiration from cities across the globe, including from Portland Oregon where skateboarders identified and built their own skate park, the projects promoters’ aim is to develop a new urban park for Glasgow to attract not only skateboarders, BMX bikers but wider local communities, including Strathbungo.

Plans for the £1m park have had funding support from Pollokshields Partnership (on which the Strathbungo Society sits), Transport Scotland, which owns the site, and Creative Scotland.

An exhibition of the plans will be at the Lighthouse from Saturday 19 July to 10 August 2014. For more information, see: http://www.thelighthouse.co.uk/visit/exhibition/gusm74
