New Victoria Gardens’ Annual Flower & Vegetable Show – 19 August 2-5pm

NVG poster

New Victoria Gardens’ Annual Flower & Vegetable Show is adding something new this year —a home-grown High Street with ‘shops’ and open spaces dotted throughout the 3.3 acre site.

A highlight of the Glasgow summer calendar for over a century, this year’s event  is set for Saturday, 19 August, 2-5pm at 55 Glenapp Street in Pollokshields G41 2NQ.

Among the attractions:

  • Vintage & Retro Boutique with upcycled clothing and collectables
  • Fiona’s Flower Shop, with cut flowers and bouquets, houseplants & floral-themed gifts
  • Shed-loads of Art – mini galleries in the greenhouses
  • High Rise Bakery with artisan loaves and rolls
  • The Open Air Market with jam, pickles and cordials plus pick-of-the-day produce
  • Street food – delicious grub with veggie options
  • The NVG Tea Room with legendary home-baking
  • Plants grown and sold by the allotmenteers
  • Kid’s corner with a bouncy castle and games
  • ‘Live from Albert Square’ – music and performance in the courtyard
  • and no High Street is complete without a pub so there’s a beer & wine bar too!

All that and more,  plus an old-time Flower & Vegetable Show, with hundreds of prize-winning plants, flowers and produce, much of it on sale for bargain prices at the end of the day.

Admission is a very reasonable £1, and accompanied children under 12 are free!

Developments in Pollok Park

The Council has started a consultation project on the future of the Stable block (next to Pollok House) and surrounding listed buildings (sawmill and walled gardens). There will be consultation sessions, organised by Northlight Heritage.

These were originally scheduled to begin in late July, but have been postponed to allow more time to raise awareness of the project. New dates will be posted here as soon as we have them.

The next meeting of the Friends of Pollok Park group is Wednesday 16 August if anyone would like to attend. You can find out more about this new group on Facebook.

Bungo in the Back Lanes – clearing the lanes

Bungo in the Back Lanes… It’s back, this Saturday June 17th, and better than ever!

To make sure that we make best use of the space in the lanes, we’re asking that folk could move vehicles out of the lanes, just for the day.

So, if your property backs on to the lanes, can you help by moving your car / van / etc out of the lane for the day please?

Thank you!

Volunteers wanted for Bungo in the Back Lanes

Running this event takes a fair bit of work so we’re asking if there are any folk who would like to help out, especially on the day (June 17 this year), although there is some preparation work as well:

  • help by putting posters up around the area (and taking them down)
  • help to make sure the lanes are free of rubbish and hazards
  • help by moving your car / van / camper / trailer / etc out of the lanes on the day (June 17)
  • help to set up and take down on the day
  • help to steward the lanes on the day
  • help on one of the stalls on the day

For more on what’s needed and how to volunteer, check our Volunteers page.

Regent Park Square Street Party, Sunday 4 June 2017

Hey folks, while you’re thinking of what to do for Bungo in the Back Lanes 2017 (Saturday 17th June), along comes another Strathbungo-based event from the folks that brought you Strathbungo Window Wanderland – with funding support from the Strathbungo Society.

The Council’s Street Play programme offers a free road closure – it usually costs around £1,000 –RPSSportsDay image so residents have decided to take up the offer and stage the first-ever Regent Park Square Street Party on Sunday 4 June 2017.

It’s got something for everyone; for the kids, there’s a Cycle Fun event and Sports Day; there’s home baking for discerning diners (please get in touch with organisers if you want to donate); a Bungo SwapShop (what can you swap, to get?) and – from 4.30pm – a self-organised, come ye all, Bungo BBQ (bring your own stuff).

Everyone’s welcome and the hope is that the road will be car-free all day!  So hop, skip, jump or simply stroll down and mingle with the crowds.

It’s free and everyone’s welcome, but feel free to donate to keep the party going next year!
