The GSR South Side Comedy Club

People of the Bungo. Bungonians, Bungites, The Bung.

Greetings from The Greater Shawlands Republic. As you may know, the GSR is a satire movement which seeks independence for the south side of Glasgow. To that end, we provide cabaret/comedy events downstairs in The Bungo Bar and Kitchen, Nithsdale Road, on the 1st Sunday of each month.

The main aim of the GSR (autonomy aside) is to provide a high quality comedy night for people in the south side. An alternative to schlepping all the way into town or to the west end for your comedy fix. You could still do that, of course – but we’re on your doorstep and only six pounds. Or six polloks, rather ( the GSR has it’s own currency).

So far, the shows and the feedback have been excellent. We have featured comedians of the calibre and reputation of Fred MacAuley and Phillip Differ, we’ve been featured and interviewed by BBC Radio Scotland’s Comedy Cafe and our gigs are invariably sold-out.

We sincerely believe we’re providing something distinct , valuable and great fun. We want to make GSR at The Bungo the official south side comedy club. You know, “our place”. For the southsiders.

So, come down and join the party some time. It’s Sunday night laughs, a little live music, some close-up magic and and a very friendly atmosphere.

It’s been a little while since we’ve posted a what’s on listing but with the bumper bank holiday month of May coming up, it’s worth mentioning some of the local events happening over the next few weeks.

As well as our Brighter Bungo clean up and planting day, Saturday May 5th sees the return of Govanhill’s Streetland festival. There’s live music, performance and open air cinema in the streets of Govanhill.

On the evening of May 6th, the campaign for a Greater Shawlands Republic will be gathering pace at The Bungo Bar & Kitchen’s Basement. Tickets are £4.99 and acts include Bruce Morton, Andrew Learmonth and Fred MacAuley. The first event in April was a sell-out and very, very funny.

The following Saturday May 12th is a date to remember for keen Southside gardeners – it’s the legendary Sherbroke St Gilberts plant sale. Get there early for the best choice.

17th -20th May is this year’s Southside Film Festival. The programme will be announced on May 1st but last year’s event was great and I know there are already plans afoot for an open air cinema event at a secret location.

The last weekend in May sees two days of fun in the Spring sun with the Southside Festival and Ready Steady Grow. New Victoria Gardens is also opening its doors for a spring open day as part of Ready Steady Grow on Sunday 27th.

Welcome Home

Something that’s been talked about a bit in the past but never really progressed is the idea of creating Strathbungo welcome packs for people new to the area. If you sell up or let to new tenants, it could be something you leave behind.

The main purpose would be to fill in the annoying knowledge gaps you often get when moving to a new place – what’s the bin etiquette? Where’s the nearest doctor? A good plumber? A free cash machine? A lot of this info is on the blog…but how do you find out about the blog?

I think it would be great if the Society could put together something that movers could print out and leave for the new residents – a nice way to say hello to the neighbourhood and make them feel part of the Bungo community.

What would you like to see included? What do you wish you’d known about when you moved here, or what do you wish your new neighbours had known about!

Spotted – endangered species

It must be spring – rare species are cropping up everywhere and the latest to fly into our neck of the woods is…a free cash machine.

Yes, no more traipsing to the 24hr garage or Vicky Rd to get your mitts on your hard-earned cash without paying for the privilege. Maxwell’s the off-licence and grocer on Nithsdale Road, has just installed a shiny new FREE hole in the wall machine.

It’s the small things that make all the difference.

Is there a plant you associate with Strathbungo?

What grows well in your garden or a neighbour’s?

Which plants do you notice as the seasons change?

The holly trees that punctuate the green streetscape of Pollokshields relate to its motto “Do good while the holly is green”. There are holly trees on nearly every street and this got the Society thinking – is there a plant for Strathbungo?

We know the area was known for growing flowers as crops in the past and we’re researching this but we’d like you to nominate a plant for Strathbungo with the aim of finding one we can all be encouraged to grow in pots, window boxes, back greens or gardens.

We’re hoping to combine this with a community planting project at Bungo In The Back Lanes and distribute seedlings.

We’ve already had one suggestion for Eryngium Alpinum (pictured), described as “A really lovely plant; it is strong, tough and really represents the spirit of the Strathbungo Community.”

SHAWLANDS MELA, Saturday 17 March, 10am – 3pm

Now that Spring’s almost here, do you fancy something different, something that celebrates the South Side’s cultural diversity – well Shawlands Mela is just the place for you – and yours.  Organised by Shawlands Academy PTC, this first-ever Shawlands Mela has all the fun of the fair: from henna hand-painting to bouncy castles, from Asian (and other) food stalls to live entertainment and lots else besides including local coffee and bakehouse, Tapa.  So why don’t you come along to Shawlands Academy for a fun day “in”.Entrance is £1 per adult and 50p per child, open: 10 am to 3 pm.

Viennese Ensemble Seeks Musicians

Are you a violinist, cellist or accordionist looking for an local ensemble to play in?

The Viennese Ensemble is a group of musicians from Glasgow who perform a wide repertoire of Viennese and Eastern European music. Since forming in 1999, the group has played at bar mitzvahs, bookshops and weddings, at charity events, in museums, churches, hotels, Princes Square and the Merchant City.  It has also given more formal concerts at Mugdock Country Park, Adelaides Church and St Andrews in the Square.

The Ensemble was founded by Barbara Olding, a well known pianist and music teacher in the south side of Glasgow.

“The Viennese Ensemble is a mix of professional and talented amateur musicians.  We play a selection of popular, light music from Hungary, Romania, the Balkans and of course Vienna.” – Barbara

The Viennese Ensemble already has a couple of members from Strathbungo, including myself.  I can honestly say that the repertoire is a joy to play, and that the ensemble is a charming and personable group of all ages, from university students to retirees.  We rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:30, in the neighbourhood just south of Queen’s Park.  If you think you might want to join us, please e-mail me at “deidrem -at- btinternet.com” or Daphne Wassermann at “daphne -at- aquarius1000.plus.com”

New Victoria Gardens Open Day and Annual Show 2011

The Allotment Show ImageNew Victoria Gardens allotments open day is on Saturday the 20th of August, 2pm-5pm. Come and see the prize-winning fruit, veg and flowers on exhibit in the hall – most sold at bargain prices at the end of the day. Plenty of your Strathbungo neighbours have plots, so come along and say hello. Click here to see the location of the allotments.

  • Massive plant stall with annuals, perennials, fresh produce & cut flowers– plus free advice from the gardeners who grew them
  • Many other stalls including handicrafts, bric-a-brac, honey & jam, tombola
  • A chance to peer into 64 individual gardens and chat with the plotholders
