Bungo bird fest

Fieldfare feasting on rowan berries Queen Square today

The last two weeks or so has seen Strathbungo’s greatest annual wildlife spectacle.  Hundreds of birds, most obviously  fieldfare from Scandinavia, have come in to  feast on bungo’s berries.  The spectacle seems to be later than in previous years and to have gone on longer.  This is probably a consequence perhaps of this year’s excellent berry crop.  I saw hundreds of fieldfare up in Kintail in October but with so much food they have been able to idle their way south and will stay as long as the food source lasts.

Local characters – David Murray

David Murray may not be the most familiar Strathbungo character, given he lives 35 miles away on a farm in West Lothian, but he has surprisingly strong links to the community.

He has been delivering fresh organic fruit and vegetables fortnightly to the area for many years (thewholeshebag.co.uk), and regularly serves at the Society’s Back Lanes Tea Garden. His son has even provided the musical accompaniment on the pipes some years.

He recently helped clear the railway embankment at Marywood Square in preparation for spring planting, and is a dab hand at patching cobbles in the back lanes, currently restoring a section off Marywood Square. He is landscaping several gardens, including fresh turf for the tea garden this year.

Single handedly sprucing up Strathbungo – if you spot him, say hi!

Money available for our area!

Our Council Ward (Ward 6) has money available to spend on the area. Do you have ideas on what could be done here?

Ward 6 poster

The Council is looking to form a Citizen’s Panel to decide this, and it would be great to have a voice (or two) from Strathbungo on the panel.

You will get:

  • training
  • support
  • out of pocket expenses
  • the chance to meet new people
  • to learn more about how decisions are made about your area
  • the opportunity to change your community

Here’s the application form if you’d like to be on the panel: WARD 6 LEAFLET

Glasgow City Consultation – Parks and Green Spaces

Hi folks

Please see the following link to a Glasgow City Council formal consultation on a Vision for Glasgow Parks and Green Spaces.

GGC Consultations.

I think we should be pushing for greater “city-wide” recognition for Queens Park – and much higher levels of maintenance.

Make your own suggestions direct to the Council, discuss them here, or pass them to me at chair@strathbungo.co.uk

Btw – there is a Consultation Hub and there are several other consultation of relevance – Transport, High Street etc. – at the same GGC Consultations link which may be of interest.

Santa needs our help!

santa's faceChristmas should be a time of enjoyment for all families but not everyone will have what they need, even to eat. Sadly, food banks have become necessary to help members of our community throughout the year. They are especially vital to ensure that no one should go hungry at Christmas time. Our local food banks are providing an essential  service, but they rely on contributions to provide that help.

To assist in that effort, the Strathbungo Society would like to encourage everyone to make a donation, as every little helps. Our nearest collection points are in the Sainsbury’s across the railway bridge, or in the Co-operative in Pollokshaws Road at the Post Office.

Just remember, please don’t donate fresh food or frozen food. But anything from tea, coffee, long life milk or fruit juice, to tinned goods or packaged goods like cereals or pasta could make a difference to someone in our own community who would otherwise not be having Christmas at all. Many also need soap, toiletries or sanitary products.

We know that our community is generous and can help others out. All donations are warmly welcomed.

Thank you.

Constituency boundary review

Excerpt from Boundaries Commission Review announcement today.  The original proposal was for the SW/SE constituency boundary to go along the railway track and then to swing into into Newlands.  It would have cut Pollokshields Ward into two.  The new boundary is along Pollokshaws Rd and respects existing boundaries.   We will discuss at next Strathbungo Society Committee meeting but the changes appear to have addressed our concerns.
“The Boundary Commission for Scotland published its Revised Proposals for UK Parliament constituencies today, Tuesday 17 October 2017, for an eight-week final public consultation period.  The Review covers all of Scotland except Orkney and Shetland constituency and Na h-Eileanan an lar constituency which are fixed by legislation.

The final consultation period allows further comments to be made to the Commission concerning any of its Revised Proposals for constituencies.

Comments on the Revised Proposals can be made on our interactive consultation portal, www.bcs2018.org.uk, where you can view the boundaries and name of the constituencies proposed and compare them with the existing constituency boundaries and other boundaries. Comments can also be made by email to bcs@scottishboundaries.gov.uk, or in writing to the address on this letter.  All comments should be submitted no later than 11 December 2017 which is the end of the statutory consultation period, after which the Commission will finalise its recommendations and submit these to the Secretary of State for Scotland in September 2018.
Further information regarding the review is available on our website:
www.bcomm-scotland.independent.gov.uk.”

How could we use the Nithsdale Road phone box?

The red phone box on Nithsdale Road is one of the few remaining in Glasgow and BT have now indicated that it is “surplus to requirements” being very little used.   They have committed to repainting it and are offering it for community use.

Ideas for future use of the phone box have been discussed as part of the Pollokshields “Make your Mark” walkarounds and also by the Strathbungo Society committee. We’d like to discuss options for its use at our AGM next week, and we’re running a very short survey to see what people think about its use.

You’ll find the survey here. It closes at 5pm pn Wednesday 18th October, so don’t delay!

Developments in Pollok Park

The Council has started a consultation project on the future of the Stable block (next to Pollok House) and surrounding listed buildings (sawmill and walled gardens). There will be consultation sessions, organised by Northlight Heritage.

These were originally scheduled to begin in late July, but have been postponed to allow more time to raise awareness of the project. New dates will be posted here as soon as we have them.

The next meeting of the Friends of Pollok Park group is Wednesday 16 August if anyone would like to attend. You can find out more about this new group on Facebook.
