I’ll drink to that!

Bungo In The Back Lanes will be dry no more! The Strathbungo Society got confirmation this week that we have had our licence for two beer gardens for Saturday 18th June approved.

The bars will be run by Mulberry St, our local bar and bistro. As ever, no alcohol can be consumed outside the licensed areas. Our ability to secure a licence in future will be jeopardised if we break the terms of the licence.

Thanks are due to Glasgow City Council and Mulberry St for all their help and advice. Cheers!

Let’s get cooking!

Fancy selling some homebaking at this year’s Bungo In The Back Lanes? Rustling up some smoothies in your garden? Dishing out sandwiches to all and sundry?

If you are planning to prepare or serve food to the public at the event, then you should contact Environmental Health at Glasgow City Council on 0141 287 6688 or email : foodsafety@glasgow.gov.uk to discuss the matter further. They can provide advice on what you would need to do meet legal requirements to ensure you are providing safe food.

Arrange a meeting, have a chat about what you’re planning and get advice on food hygiene and safety. I went through the process in order to sell some veggie food from my back garden and it was quick, painless and informative.

The food safety team are aware there may be a few calls from Strathbungo this month. I met with :

Before your meeting, it makes sense to brush up on food safety and hygiene information. Most of it’s common sense and much of the information is geared at caterers or restaurants but I found the information here useful.

Alison also gave me some leaflets that are not available online which I’m happy to lend to anyone who’d like advice. Don’t let the extra bureaucracy this year put you off getting involved. Including this post, I’ve probably had to spend just 45 minutes getting genned up, arranging the meeting and showing Alison my plans. Plus, my kitchen has benefited from a bit of a tidy and a good spring clean!

Your documented food safety management procedures should be reviewed prior to this event to ensure everything is up to date. This system needs to be made available for Officers as spot checks may be carried out on the day. You will also find information provided by the Food Standards Agency at www.foodstandards.gov.uk

Sainsbury’s For Darnley Road?

An interesting wee article in the Evening Times today about the possible opening by the end of the year of a Sainsbury’s on Darnley Road on the site of the old petrol station. The size of the space and the planning application indicate it will be a similar size to the unit they recently opened on Victoria Road (on the former Hoey’s site).

Work has not yet started but several of the local shopkeepers, particularly those running convenience stores and newsagents, have expressed concern about the potential impact on the local independent shops and Pollokshields’ villagey feel. What do you think? Is anything an improvement on a derelict site? Would you shop there in preference to the smaller shops? Or do you think it will add to the area and encourage you to shop more locally instead of driving to a bigger supermarket at Silverburn or Braehead?

A New Start For The Fotheringay?

Residents on Nithsdale Rd recently received notice of plans to renovate the old Fotheringay pub which has been empty for two years. The people behind the proposed £110K refit own two successful restaurants in the West End – Left Bank on Gibson St and Two Figs on Byres Road.

I popped into the Council offices to look at the plans today. The changes being proposed would lead to a similar appearance to that of Left Bank. They’ll be reorganising the interior, opening up ‘windows’ between rooms and exposing some of the cornicing. The plans also indicate that they’d like to paint the front facing grey and install a huge sliding window on about half the front elevation. Finally, as it’s a food-focused venue, they’re hoping to get consent for installing a flue at the back of the building and up the tenement block.

We’ve contacted the design company and asked if a representative would like to come along to Monday’s meeting to chat about the proposals. If you’d like to find out more about the plans, do come along – 7.30pm, Monday 18th April at Grianach on Nithsdale Rd. You can also look at the plans before the meeting at the Council offices at 229 George St 9-5pm on Monday ref: 11/00378/DC.

Finally, and to avoid confusion, one of the names used by the company on the application is The Bungo Ltd but they are in no way connected with the Society or Bungo events!

Spring Fling This Saturday

Spring Fling and the announcement of the winners of this year’s children’s art competition is this Saturday 26th March. The event takes place from 10.30am-1.00pm in Queens Park Parish Church Hall, 170 Queens Drive. The winners of the competition will be announced and prizes presented at 11.30. Winning artworks will be displayed in local cafes for the next two weeks but all entries (237 of them!) will be displayed together in the Church Hall on the day.

We’d love extra helpers, either to put up the display the night before (7-9pm in the hall) or on the day itself and, if you’re a whiz with a whisk, please do donate a batch of home baking – just bring it in on the day or drop it off the night before.

Entry to the event is £1.50 for adults (this includes a drink and a cake) and 50p for children. There will also be crafts on display and art activities.
