Brighter Bungo July 3rd

Thanks to everyone who turned out on Sunday morning to help clean our back lanes, despite a no-show from the previously very supportive Clean Glasgow initiative of the Council. As ever, we could have done so much more with a few extra volunteers, but with just nine of us in two hours we did our best, covering the three lanes amongst the squares. We were able to clear a lot of bulk, such as the top left picture in the Queen Square / Regent Park Square lane, then a litter sweep. The resultant pile of cleared rubbish showed the work that went in.

Laura has organised several of these clear-ups, and each time we make a huge difference. However, the area we can cover is always limited by the number of people – perhaps next time, you too could help, then we can cover more of the lanes, and the Moray Place verge as well?

Queens Park Arena go-ahead

Nearly ten years ago, the Strathbungo Society was awarded a grant from ENTRUST which was originally destined for revision of part of the back lanes.

The cost of relaying even a small part of the lanes in a conservation area proved prohibitive, and we were faced with either using the money or having to give it back. The criteria were stringent, and the two options of a piece of equipment for the Balvicar Street playpark, or donating to the Queens Park Arena project were voted on by you at Bungo in the Back Lanes and the AGM in October. Following this, we offered around £20000 to the Queens Park Arena, which will restore bandstand and seating to it’s former glory. The winning design is shown.

Planning has now been approved, and work should begin this year on the £230000 first phase of the project – and the Strathbungo Society is acknowledged alongside Glasgow City Council through the local area committees and the Scottish Government as a major contributor.

Scottish Civic Trust ‘My Place’ Awards

After being approached by a user of the new Scottish Ballet headquarters on Pollokshaws Road, the Strathbungo Society have nominated the building for a My Place award. The Scottish Civic Trust requires that the nomination is made from an SCT-affiliated society, and we were well placed to make the nomination.

The building was designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects, and has given Scottish Ballet an optimally designed building which allows the many facets of Scottish Ballet to come together under one roof. The Scottish Ballet building was open to the public on Doors Open Day in September, allowing us to have a window into a world that I, for one, will certainly never be able to take part in! The building was already winner of Scotland’s best new building at the Scottish Design Awards in 2010, and lots more information can be found at http://www.glasgowarchitecture.co.uk/scottish_ballet.php.

The winner will be announced in March, and we’ll keep you posted.

New Year’s Resolutions

What are your New Year’s Resolutions?  Are they still abiding by them? Have you got room for another Strathbungo Resolution?

We hear many things from you all about what you would like to see us doing in Strathbungo, but in truth we can’t do everything, and we need you all to play your part.

A number of contacts recently have been about the fabric of the local area. The Strathbungo Society have organised a number of ‘Brighter Bungo’ lanes clear-ups in the last year, but we could all help ourselves a lot more in keeping the area tidier. We also need more of you helping to report the road and drain problems, and any antisocial activity you witness.

The Bungoblog calendar will prompt you as to when the bin collections are due. How about keeping bins in your gardens to reduce the spillage of rubbish in the lanes, and prevent the bin-rakers who have intermittently been targeting the area? It would also neaten the lanes and make it easier to gain access.

The Glasgow City Council website has links to report road faults, fly tipping, lighting faults, blocked drains and many other problems.

Please help us to make 2011 an great year for Strathbungo.

Happy New Year!

Slowing down

Speaking, I admit, as one of the lucky ones who didn’t need to use a car this week, was it really so bad walking to work? Has anyone else seen things they would never normally have had time to look at? There’s a lot going on between here and the West End, and the sunrise over the Clyde on Wednesday morning with mist swirling over the ice pancakes on the water was glorious. I just wish I had taken a proper camera.

Next time.

Though hands-up who thinks their house rivals Altnaharra for the coldest place in the UK…

Welcome to the new Bungo Blog!

So here it is…

The biggest message we took away from the AGM in October was that you wanted improvements in the Bungo Blog. I for one want to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to Matt, Jonathan, Chris and Dee for all their efforts in the last month. There is still room for improvement, and if you have a special interest, know some history about the area, or would like to contribute to, or edit, your own section, then please get in touch. Alternatively, you can all register to post here, or in the forum. This is your Blog.

As you’ll see below, the Strathbungo Society is having it’s Christmas party next week in Grianach, so join us for a drink to say hello, or to tell us all about your plans.

Hope to see you there…
