Art of Gardening, Oct. 20

“If horticulture is a science, then gardening is an art. Join us to experience artworks inspired by New Victoria Gardens Association”

Sunday, October 20, 2013,
2:30pm until 5:00pm
St Albert’s Church Hall, Albert Drive, Pollokshields, Glasgow

Join the event on Facebook

We are honoured to have as our special guest the well-known artist Avril Paton, who has made Glasgow tenements famous around the world. She will be giving an illustrated talk on, among other things, how she turned our Gardens into a work of art in her much-loved painting, The Allotments (1993). She was at our open day in August and it will be interesting to see what she makes of the Gardens 20 years on!

We will also be showcasing the talents of other artists in various media who have been inspired by New Victoria Gardens:

  • Photographs by Roy MacGregor, who has documented the flora and fauna of the 2013 growing season.
  • Water colours and drawings by Dorothy Allan, an eclectic mix exploring themes of nature, flowers and plant-life.
  • /Vivarium/by Nic Green, an audio-visual installation at NVG which was part of the Albert Drive project at the Tramway. A chance to relive the experience through the magic of video.
  • Paintings and drawings from the Maxwell Painting Group, a lively bunch of professionals and gifted amateurs who often set up their easels at the Gardens.

Talking about Dancing…

I just got back from a dance fitness class down in Battlefield. It has started up this week and I wanted to tell everyone about it because it’s really fun and I (selfishly) want it to have more attendees so that it keeps going. The style is based on ballroom dances steps, but there’s no partner dancing. If anyone out there enjoys Strictly Come Dancing, then here’s your change to pretend you’re training to compete. The low-down:

  • The Studio: Stepz in Time
  • £4 a class, walk-in.
  • Monday 7.15 – 8.15 pm
  • Tuesday 9.30 – 10.30 am

The teacher, Lorraine, has just opened her own studio. It’s located in an old Glazier’s workshop on a lane just off of Battlefield Road, a block south-east of The Battlefield Rest and Beanscene. It takes 1/2 hour to walk there from Strathbungo and by car it would only be about 10 minutes, if that. There’s plenty of parking on the street and I saw several spots open. The address is 176A Battlefield Rd.

If you like Zumba, this class would be a great way to mix it up. If you used to do aerobics in the 80s or 90s and enjoyed it, then it would be right up your street. It’s focused on dance with no “blah, blah, blah, burn that fat, whatever,” which I consider a plus. Also, Lorraine encourages you to modify moves if you want, which is nice if you, like me, are a bit less bouncy than you once were (but I feel sure that if I keep it up, I’ll get bouncier again!)

Lorraine has adult tap classes and children’s dance classes, too. You can connect with her through her website. She also has a webpage and a Facebook page dedicated to StrictlyFitSteps.

If you’re a freelancer, a consultant, an independent creative professional, a stay-at-home mum or dad or anyone else who has flexible hours and this sounds like fun to you, please check out the Tuesday, 9:30 am class. It’s hard to find this kind of thing being offered during the workday, and it will get cancelled if there aren’t at least 4-6 people every week.

Volunteers Needed to Help Deliver Newsletter

The newsletter is ready, but Andrew desperately needs more people to help deliver it. It’s a relatively easy job that only comes four times a year, so why not step up? When there’s someone for each street, it’s quick and easy. However, when a few people have to do all the work, it’s really hard on them. Lately, Andrew and Stephen have been going above and beyond, handling many of the streets themselves.

Here are the routes that need people for newsletter delivery:

  • March Street
  • Both sides of Nithsdale Road
  • Queen Square
  • Pollokshaws Road, Nithsdale Rd./Torrisdale to Allison, both sides
  • Pollokshaws Road, the park to Torrisdale, east side

It would also make a certain amount of sense to deliver to Nithsdale Drive and to Pollokshaws Road between Allison and Calder, if anyone is willing to take that on. Not everyone is able to read the newsletter or find out about community events online, and that’s why newsletter delivery is still important.

If you’ve got half an hour four times a year to help deliver the newsletter, then contact Andrew at adownie (at) doctors (dot) org (dot) uk. He’d love to hear from you!

Just as a reminder, the Strathbungo Society is an all-volunteer community organisation, not a business or even a social enterprise.

Lovestruck is Open!

Just a heads-up to all the cheesecake lovers out there: the Lovestruck Cheesecake Cafe opens officially tomorrow, Tuesday, September 2nd. They’re down the block from Shimla Pink’s, in the spot where the candy shop used to be.

There’ll be art photography on the walls, hand painted tables and locally roasted Dear Green coffee. I’ve tried the cheesecakes, and they are really nice. The creative flavours, like rosemary-lemon and spicy chocolate, are especially good. These are real, baked mini-cheescakes; no Philly cream cheese shortcuts. They’re a nice size, too. Not too big and not too small. Try them out and see what you think.

The Newest Strathbungo Society Newsletter has gone to the printer’s, and you can get a jump on it by downloading it here. Just click on the picture to the left. This quarter’s newsletter has articles on the old Strathbungo Kirk, the new Buddy’s restaurant opening on Pollokshaw’s Road, the new Lovestruck cheese cake cafe, and more. Meet our new columnist: the Grumpy Pensioner. Get energy saving tips from South Seeds. There are plenty of pictures of this year’s Bungo in the Back Lanes, too.

Thanks so much for everyone who took the time to look it over on short notice. Thanks especially to Andrew Downie, who caught several misspelled names.

Any problems with BungoBlog?

I just updated BungoBlog to WordPress version 3.6, and I’ve been updating plug-ins over the past few weeks, too. That means that some of Matt’s customizations might have gotten steamrolled in the process and that new bugs could have been introduced. If you notice anything wrong with BungoBlog, please let me know in the comments and I’ll see if I can fix it. -Dee

BITBL anecdotes for the newsletter?

While this year’s Bungo in the Back Lanes is still fresh in everyone’s mind, does anyone have any stories they want to tell about it for the next newsletter? Anything from a short message with a little piece of news or a report on how something went to a feature-length article would be welcome. Also, pics are always good. I managed to get some myself this year, but I didn’t catch everything. Feel free to comment below or send an e-mail. Thanks much!!

Bungo in the Backlanes 2013 pictures

Wow! What a beautiful day it ended up being yesterday. Bungo at the Backlanes went well and was absolutely packed with people. The lanes were crowded with all kinds of activities, tea gardens, home cooking and things for sale. Neighbourhood volunteers stepped up once again and got the beer tent and Strathbungo Society gazebos built up and taken down, along with running the stalls, providing health and safety support and keeping the event organised.

I’ve uploaded some Bungo in the Backlanes 2013 pictures to a set associated with my Flickr account and added them to the Strathbungo Flickr group. Anyone else who has pics: if they’re on Flickr, maybe add them to the Strathbungo group? If they’re elsewhere online, maybe provide a link below or link to them in a new post?

Everything I took is either a crowd/group shot or taken with permission. However, if someone sees themselves or a family member in one of the pics and doesn’t want it online, just let me know, and I’ll delete it. Thanks!

Beginners’ Tai Chi starts again today (Monday, 14 Jan.)

Tai’ Chi is a Chinese exercise regimen that improves strength, balance, posture and concentration. It has two components: a defined set of movements, or form, and push hands, which is done with a partner.

Tai’ Chi was first developed as training for the martial arts, a type of shadow boxing. Today, it’s a an art and a discipline in and of itself. Tai’ Chi is zero impact and is safe and beneficial for people of all ages.

Strathbungo Tai Chi:

  • Starting Monday, 14th January
  • 7.30pm – 9.30pm
  • Queens Park Church Of Scotland (170 Queens Drive)
  • £6 waged / £4 unwaged

The classes will be taught by Glen Williams of Five Winds. He can be contacted at williams.glen (at) yahoo.co.uk or at 07891760744.

For those who prefer a daytime class, there’s also this one:

  • Starting Wednesday 16th January
  • 10:00 am – 11:00 am
  • Toryglen Community Hall (199 Prospecthill Circus)
  • £3.50 per class

That class will also be taught by Glen. You can book a place on 0141 569 1031 or by e-mailing toryglen.community (at) gmail.com.

If you’re interested but can’t make it this week, it’s all right to start next week or possibly even the week after.
