McLachlans of Strathbungo

Here’s a genealogical request:

“I have traced my family to Strathbungo Village. Any information on the Mclachlan’s from 1793: Barbara Mclachlan had three children Daniel (1822), Catherine (1824) and Barbara (1834). Also where can I get or buy photos or books about the village? Would appreciate any info. Helen”

    Hi Helen,

I received your e-mail as secretary of the Strathbungo Society. I’ve got some good news and some bad news. First of all, we don’t currently have any information on McLachlans living in the area. However, we’re about to start up a local history group in Strathbungo using records from Glasgow’s Mitchell Library. We’re hoping to get a group of volunteers started on this project early in the new year and the aim is to build up a searchable database which will provide information about the past residents of every house in Strathbungo.

There’s an article about the project which was printed in our newsletter earlier this year: Spring news. It’s on page 2 “Who lived in a house like this?”

I’m not currently aware of any books dedicated exclusively to Strathbungo but there is a good section on the area in this title: Villages of Glasgow.

There are also a few quirky literary references to Strathbungo – mainly due to the comic attributes of the name! – courtesy of WM Thackeray in his Book Of Snobs:

‘Are you married, Jack?’ says I, remembering how consumedly in love he was with his cousin Letty Lovelace, when the Cuttykilts were quartered at Strathbungo some twenty years ago.

And PG Wodehouse in Damsel In Distress:

“He went back to ‘is roller-skating, and ‘er ladyship took up visiting the poor and eventually contracted an altogether suitable alliance by marrying
Lord Ronald Spofforth, the second son of his Grace the Duke of Gorbals and Strathbungo.”
    Hope that helps!
    Laura
