Get Set for Bungo in the Back Lanes 2015!

DSC01784

With less than 5 days to go, stall-holders will soon be getting their wares together and residents counting their pennies to spend, as Bungo in the Back Lanes is happening this Saturday 20th June from 1-4pm.

Famous for its residents’ stalls selling everything from bric-a-brac and jewellery to homemade food and clothes, Bungo In The Back Lanes is bigger than ever and now takes place between Nithsdale Road and Thorncliffe Gardens. People are free to open up their garden or bring a table full of goods they’d like to sell down to the lanes on the day. It is always exciting to see what appears on the day – previous years have seen lemonade stalls, races and antiques in a shed plus many other intrepid ideas.

Other features to look out for this year include: Loch Fyne Seafood BBQ; NV Allotments plant sale; Babu Bombay Street Kitchen; Merry Go Round’s Childrens Garden with bouncy castle; face painting and games for children; Glad Café Garden; Then and Now In and Around Strathbungo Picture Show; Glasgow Sport’s activities for children; Bakery 47, Swedish Massage; Architectural Trail plus live music from local bands in each lane.

Bungo In The Back Lanes – Bring It On!

The ball is well and truly rolling on Bungo In The Back Lanes 2013. We did get a number of volunteers in response to our newsletter ad (thank you!) but we can always handle more, so we’re holding a planning meeting this Tuesday 5th February in Grianach on Nithsdale Rd from 7.30pm.Please come if you want to see the event happen this year.

We already have volunteers for the media tasks, finance and insurance applications, but we still need people to volunteer to mastermind the following:

The children’s garden – we need a new venue and someone to put on activities like face painting, story telling, the bouncy castle (if you have space), games etc.

Health and Safety – not as onerous as it sounds, the main duties are contacting the police, fire, St Andrew’s Ambulance and environmental health department, making sure we do all we can to minimise risks to the public and ourselves.

Logistics – booking tables and chairs, safety barriers, making sure high-vis vests, gazebos, banners etc get to the right places at the right time. This will be the most hands-on role during the day itself.

Entertainment – booking and paying bands, making sure they have PA systems and power.

Community – working with residents on the day and beforehand, helping resident stall holders and businesses find a spot and making sure they get added to the interactive Bungo map.

Crew – folk to help out on the day, manning Society fundraising stalls, setting up and taking down gazebos, tables and chairs, acting as stewards to help people find their way around, taking photographs of revellers.

We do have contacts, form letters and tonnes of experience to share so volunteers do not need any previous experience, just enthusiasm, a small amount of spare time in May/June and to be available on the day of the event, Saturday 22nd June.

I know people don’t like to hear this but this year, without question, the event will not happen without help from the community as well as the committee. Most of the above tasks were managed by one person last year (who will be having their third child in May this year), so a group of people should find organising the Southside’s friendliest, quirkiest local event a doddle!

Can’t make the meeting but still want to be involved? Get in touch here, via facebook, or email chair@strathbungo.co.uk

BITBL 2012 – What’s On

It’s Bungo In The Back Lanes 2012 -4 so time to fill everyone in on the runners and riders.

We’ll have all your favourites – the beer gardens, tea gardens, children’s garden, plant stall, tombola, bottle stall and introducing our very first wheel of fortune (woo!) plus we’ve been inundated with info from residents about the stalls they are planning to hold.

We’ve got animators, DJs, musicians, masseurs, bakers, crafters, gardeners, martial artists, photographers, watercolourists, confectioners, chefs, card makers, de-clutterers, face painters, temporary tattooists, book sellers.

Some of the businesses holding stalls on the day are; Barefoot books, award-winning children’s books, Locavore cooking local and foraged food, Happy Holistics chair massage, Venues to Menus macaroons and cupcakes, crafts from Vintage Zebras, Finbo Deluxe and Sew Like Me, quirky homewares from Sparrow and Co, the world’s best sausage from Gusto & Relish and even the Avon lady. On the street rather than in the lanes, Merry-go-round are hosting a treasure hunt in store.

And that’s before we get to residents and charities, like the jams and preserves being sold to raise funds for the Glasgow Islay Gaelic Choir, Liz selling cakes and cards to raise funds for the Beatson Institute and  Orangutan Appeal UK, Nicola’s amazing cupcakes, Helen’s lemonade, Lyndsay’s home-made cards, bric-a-brac, tai chi demonstrations, curry in a cup, BBQs, Nicole’s clothes and books at 4 Moray Place, the return of Candylicious and the wonderful array of local artists including Karen Cairns, The Square Slice Boys, Sarah Barr, Kato Yeah and Laura Hudson Mackay.

For children there’s the Animated Emporium Of Curiosities and the children’s garden with its bouncy castle, face painters, outdoor games, bubbles and a sand pit for the wee ones.

A music lover? We have DJ sets from La Roche Rumba, live music from Dean Queasy and the Viennese Ensemble plus more DJs in gardens and live music in the Glad Cafe garden.

There really is something for everyone in all the lanes and don’t forget the event this year stretches from Nithsdale Road to Vennard Gardens, so bring your friends, suncream and a brolly and prepare to party on the cobbles.

Health And Safety

We’ve had a few queries recently about food stalls and BBQs so we thought it made sense to have all the info in one place.

The Society obviously can’t dictate what people may choose to do in their private gardens but we do have to make sure we’ve considered all the risks to the public during the event and how to minimise them.

If you’re planning to serve food, you must contact the food safety department of Glasgow City Council who will examine the cooking premises being used prior to the event and spot-check on the day. Phone 0845 2701558 or email: foodsafety@glasgow.gov.uk

We’d prefer to keep BBQ and camping stoves etc to a minimum but if you are going ahead, as well as contacting Food Safety you also need to consider the fire risks involved. We have been informed by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue that The Scottish Executive has published guidance entitled “Practical Fire Safety Guidance for Places of Entertainment and Assembly.”

It’s free to download here: http://www.firelawscotland.org/v2893b.html?pContentID=221

The bottom line – keep flammable liquids safe, make sure you have extinguishers to hand and make sure anyone coming in your garden can get out easily and the Fire Service can enter easily!

If you have any concerns about potential health and safety risks, do let us know either before the event or by speaking to a Bungo steward on the day. We’ll also be out walking the back lanes every day next week to check access and hazards and keep on top of litter and fly-tipping (we hope!) Extra volunteers welcome!

Bungo In The Back Lanes Update

With less than two weeks to go to the big Bungo bash, it’s time for an update.

Stallholders are getting in touch every day with their stall ideas and locations. Keep checking the Bungo map to find out what’s going on. And if you have grand plans, get in touch either via the blog or email chair@strathbungo.co.uk

If you want to set up a stall but don’t have a back garden of your own Queen/Regent and Regent/Nithsdale currently look like the lanes with most available space but, as ever, it’s hard to judge before the day itself.

Latest additions include:

The Glad Cafe on Regent/Queen Lane, pilates sessions and health and fitness info on Marywood/Queen and The Animated Emporium of Curiosities on Marywood/Vennard.

The Glad Cafe are hoping to open a place on Pollokshaws Rd in the near future. They will be at the back of No.41 Regent Park square with live music, bric-a-brac and tea/coffee plus paintings by local artists The Square Slice Boys.

The Animated Emporium of Curiosities will be behind 33 Marywood Square and features children’s games and animations by the team that brought you the animation workshops at Spring Fling,

The children’s garden will have a bouncy castle, a Merry-Go-Round bring-and-buy sale (do look out clean, good quality kids’ items to bring along), face painting by Fun Paint Factory, kindly sponsored by Eglinton Dental Practice and a stall from Barefoot Books plus a selection of fun village-fete style games to play and bubbles.

Our posters are now out and about and the flyers have just been printed. We’ll be dropping those off in local shops and businesses over the next few days. Get in touch if you’d like to help distribute any.

We’re also still looking for tombola/raffle donations (please drop off at 53 Queen Square) and a small freezer for the Marywood tea garden.

We’ve also taken a big gulp and sneaked a peek at a long-range weather forecast. It’s not likely to be hugely reliable this far out but it looks like sunny spells and 17 degrees Celsius with a chance of showers.

The event is always on and always fun come rain or shine but it would be lovely to have a bit of sun this year!

There’s a final planning meeting this Monday 18th, 7.30pm in The Bungo on Nithsdale Road. Do pop along if you’d like to help on the day or in the build-up.

A New Look For A Bigger Bungo In The Back Lanes

Hot off the press (well, actually, not quite on the press) a sneak preview of our new-look poster for this year’s Bungo In The Back Lanes.

The posters will be popping up on lamp posts and in shops shortly – get in touch if you want to help distribute them. We love the redesign, thanks to local resident and Society member Niall Walker.

The flyers will be printed this week and it would be great to have extra help to get the word out, especially as the newsletter has already been delivered. Get in touch via the BITBL volunteers page, the comments thread, the contact us page or email chair@strathbungo.co.uk

We’ve had two extra stalls confirmed today – one in our new lane between Vennard and Marywood, selling art by Sarah Barr, and one cosmetics stall , location TBC. Keep an eye on the Bungo In The Back Lanes pages and map for updates.

The more stalls the merrier, so let us know what you’re planning. The Society are still on the hunt for a small freezer we can borrow for the Big Bungo tea garden and also a face painter for the children’s garden.

Let’s get cooking!

Fancy selling some homebaking at this year’s Bungo In The Back Lanes? Rustling up some smoothies in your garden? Dishing out sandwiches to all and sundry?

If you are planning to prepare or serve food to the public at the event, then you should contact Environmental Health at Glasgow City Council on 0141 287 6688 or email : foodsafety@glasgow.gov.uk to discuss the matter further. They can provide advice on what you would need to do meet legal requirements to ensure you are providing safe food.

Arrange a meeting, have a chat about what you’re planning and get advice on food hygiene and safety. I went through the process in order to sell some veggie food from my back garden and it was quick, painless and informative.

The food safety team are aware there may be a few calls from Strathbungo this month. I met with :

Alison Lochrin
Technical Officer(Food Safety)
Business Regulation
Environmental Health and Trading Standards
Land and Environmental Services
231 George Street
Glasgow
G1 1RX

Telephone:0141 287 7990  Mobile: 07825780159

Email : alison.lochrin@glasgow.gov.uk

Before your meeting, it makes sense to brush up on food safety and hygiene information. Most of it’s common sense and much of the information is geared at caterers or restaurants but I found the information here useful.

Alison also gave me some leaflets that are not available online which I’m happy to lend to anyone who’d like advice. Don’t let the extra bureaucracy this year put you off getting involved. Including this post, I’ve probably had to spend just 45 minutes getting genned up, arranging the meeting and showing Alison my plans. Plus, my kitchen has benefited from a bit of a tidy and a good spring clean!

Your documented food safety management procedures should be reviewed prior to this event to ensure everything is up to date. This system needs to be made available for Officers as spot checks may be carried out on the day. You will also find information provided by the Food Standards Agency at www.foodstandards.gov.uk

Bungo Walk set for Architecture Week

Just turn up and take part on Saturday, 18 June!

Strathbungo’s own Greek Thomson Trail will be featured in this year’s national Architecture Week, 17-24 June, a celebration of the built environment throughout the UK.

“Get Closer to Architecture” is the theme for the weeklong extravaganza which aims to bring buildings to life through a series of visual and sensory experiences. Some 500 events are scheduled to take place up and down the country.

The Strathbungo Walk, staged by the Strathbungo Society as part of our annual Bungo in the Back Lanes, will start at 1.30pm on Saturday, 18 June, assembling outside Sammy Dow’s in Nithsdale Road and lasting approximately 90 minutes.

Andrew Greg, local resident and art historian, will lead the walk, looking at the origins, growth and architectural features of the conservation area and surrounding community.

BUNGo IN THE BACK LANES
Live music Beer Tents Barbecues Children’s Garden Much more!
Saturday, 18 June 2005
1-4 pm

It’s back: Strathbungo’s 6th annual BUNGo IN THE BACK LANES is set for Saturday, 18th June so mark you diary and make it a date!
This year, why not have your own stall or help out with one of the Society’s?

Think about it: you might

  • contribute to the Society’s home baking stall or run your own
  • clear out your cupboards and sell your junk (that’s treasure to someone else!)– videos, CDs, toys, bric-a-brac, you name it!
  • sell handicrafts, art, jewellery, plants, etc
  • make up some tablet, fudge or jam to sell
  • get out the barbecue and start flipping burgers
  • donate unwanted new merchandise to the Society’s tombola
  • perhaps you do aromatherapy? other complementary therapies? fortune-telling?

Or go on, surprise us:

What makes Bungo events is Bungo people!
Your stall will add fun and variety to the day and you might also make a tidy profit–for yourself or your favourite charity. All we ask is a small contribution from your proceeds to the Strathbungo Society so we can continue to running activities in our community.

If you want to have your own stall this year
OR
If you’re willing to help the Committee in any way–put up stalls, blow up balloons, take a shift as a steward, help with children’s activities, contribute to any community stalls–before the event or on the day–

Contact Joanna on 423 7756.
