Hi there
I’ve recently noticed a lot of activity around the bins in the back lane of Queen Square. Groups of men seem to be peering into the bins and removing things on a regular basis and I wondered if we need to do anything about it?
Any advice much appreciated
Thanks.
Thanks for this Katie. I contacted Strathclyde Police via email regarding this today – I have seen this on a number of occasions, twice this weekend. I’m not sure what the guys are looking for but I don’t think they are kind hearted Wombles (making good use of the things that they find) so I thought I’d flag it up. The Police response was that they have logged this as an incident and passed it to the community police for follow up.
Hi, Katie. There are a number of things we can do about this.
First and foremost is prevention – only put bins out on appointed days and do not throw out confidential items without shredding them first. Bin rakers are usually looking for items of value that can be sold for scrap.
Secondly, the Pollokshields local policing team do regularly patrol the area and keep an eye out for things like this. You can call them directly on 0141 532 5326 or on 0141 532 4990. You can also go see them at: Craigie Street Police Office (open 8am-10pm), 86 Craigie Street, Glasgow, G42 8NA.
Finally, one silver lining to the mine workings cloud may be that as there will be a lot more people and activity in the back lanes over the coming months, they won’t be such a convenient location for this type of thing!
I caught a group (an older gent with a teenager and a young kid of about 8) down the back lanes of Vennard Gardens going through the bins a couple of Sundays ago. Earlier this year (around March) my Garage was broken into and some power tools nicked. I upped the security, though last month another attempt was made to get in though unsuccessfully this time. I’ve also contacted the police about it.
Caught quite a few lately as well, mother and daughter were going through the bins the other day, quickly left when I started banging on the window! Will also contact the police in future
