Brighter Bungo Poster

Huge thanks to the multi-talented Jim Stirk and Natalie Morgan-Klein for designing our Brighter Bungo Clean-Up poster.

Who could fail to be inspired to raise their litter-pickers and get cleaning?

The more volunteers, the more we can clean, so grab your neighbours and friends, decide where most needs a spruce up and get involved. We’ll provide everything you need, thanks to Glasgow City Council and Keep Scotland Tidy.

All the family can get involved too – it’s everyone’s neighbourhood, so roll your sleeves up and get stuck in!

May Events

It’s been a little while since we’ve posted a what’s on listing but with the bumper bank holiday month of May coming up, it’s worth mentioning some of the local events happening over the next few weeks.

As well as our Brighter Bungo clean up and planting day, Saturday May 5th sees the return of Govanhill’s Streetland festival. There’s live music, performance and open air cinema in the streets of Govanhill.

On the evening of May 6th, the campaign for a Greater Shawlands Republic will be gathering pace at The Bungo Bar & Kitchen’s Basement. Tickets are £4.99 and acts include Bruce Morton, Andrew Learmonth and Fred MacAuley. The first event in April was a sell-out and very, very funny.

The following Saturday May 12th is a date to remember for keen Southside gardeners – it’s the legendary Sherbroke St Gilberts plant sale. Get there early for the best choice.

17th -20th May is this year’s Southside Film Festival. The programme will be announced on May 1st but last year’s event was great and I know there are already plans afoot for an open air cinema event at a secret location.

The last weekend in May sees two days of fun in the Spring sun with the Southside Festival and Ready Steady Grow. New Victoria Gardens is also opening its doors for a spring open day as part of Ready Steady Grow on Sunday 27th.

Welcome Home

Something that’s been talked about a bit in the past but never really progressed is the idea of creating Strathbungo welcome packs for people new to the area. If you sell up or let to new tenants, it could be something you leave behind.

The main purpose would be to fill in the annoying knowledge gaps you often get when moving to a new place – what’s the bin etiquette? Where’s the nearest doctor? A good plumber? A free cash machine? A lot of this info is on the blog…but how do you find out about the blog?

I think it would be great if the Society could put together something that movers could print out and leave for the new residents – a nice way to say hello to the neighbourhood and make them feel part of the Bungo community.

What would you like to see included? What do you wish you’d known about when you moved here, or what do you wish your new neighbours had known about!

Spotted – endangered species

It must be spring – rare species are cropping up everywhere and the latest to fly into our neck of the woods is…a free cash machine.

Yes, no more traipsing to the 24hr garage or Vicky Rd to get your mitts on your hard-earned cash without paying for the privilege. Maxwell’s the off-licence and grocer on Nithsdale Road, has just installed a shiny new FREE hole in the wall machine.

It’s the small things that make all the difference.

Brighter Bungo Goes Green

Nithsdale Road is a street brimming with potential in the heart of a fine neighbourhood but we all know it could be even better. Now the batching plant is packing up it’s a great time for the whole community to seize the opportunity and get cracking.

The Strathbungo Society is planning a community clean-up and planting day on Saturday May 5th from 10.30am as part of our ongoing Brighter Bungo scheme and Keep Scotland Beautiful’s National Spring Clean event.

Keep Scotland Beautiful is one of Scotland’s leading environmental charities. It works across Scotland cleaning and greening up communities, schools and businesses, and has been doing so since 1970. The state of Strathbungo’s litter problem is not going to change overnight but YOU can make a difference. The Society, Keep Scotland Beautiful and Clean Glasgow will supply the equipment and remove the waste – on our last Brighter Bungo clean ups we filled a skip – but we do need lots of willing volunteers.

We’ll be meeting at the planter near the junction with Moray Place but it won’t just be Nithsdale Road we’re cleaning. The more volunteers, the larger an area we can cover, so if you want to tidy up your street, back lane or verge, grab some neighbours and get stuck in.

Once the clean up is over, why not find out more about greening up your bit of the Bungo? We’ll be combining the clean up with a planting session, providing window boxes, some seeds and plants and lots of tips and ideas for perking up front gardens, planters and windowsills. So let’s forget cars and concrete and get working on flowers and foliage for a cleaner, greener, brighter Bungo.

Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink

Got problems with your water supply? There’s a burst main in Pollokshaws Road. Some people have lost supplies entirely, others have low water pressure. Not sure if it’s related but there is also flooding at Melville St Early Years Centre which means the centre is closed today (Thursday). If supplies are out for a substantial period, Scottish Water usually provides bottled water to households. 0845 601 8855 is the customer helpline at Scottish Water.

UPDATE: The burst main was fixed this afternoon and the system is recharging. Anecdotal evidence suggests all should be back to normal in Strathbungo at least. If you’re still having problems, we have a direct contact at Scottish Water: charlene.mcbride@scottishwater.co.uk

Govanhill Baths To Reopen The Toddler’s Pool

Some great news from Govanhill Baths Community Trust this week.

They, The Arches and the National Theatre of Scotland have clubbed together to create a “celebratory and interactive community drama production” in the toddler/learner’s pool.

20 performances will take place over three weeks and as part of the production the toddler/learner’s pool will have a £90,000 refit, leaving it fit for use thereafter on “a limited but significant basis”.

The performances will be in October, which means we should have a partially refurbished pool open to swimmers by the end of the year!

For those new to the area, you can find out a bit about the long path to this here:

Origins

Foul Play

Glasgow City Council is carrying out a slighty-worryingly-titled “dog fouling initiative” in our ward just now.

Some householders may have received a letter and flyer but for those who haven’t, the initiative means the Council will be stepping up enforcement activity in the area.

Enforcement officers will be “actively” monitoring the area for dog fouling offenders and issuing on-the-spot fines of £40. They will also be making more use of CCTV and are encouraging residents to call the Clean Glasgow hotline to report dog fouling in their area, particularly if they can identify the owner.

The hotline number is 0800 027 7027

or email clean@glasgow.gov.uk

or write (evidently on a very large envelope) to:

Clean Glasgow, Public Relations and Marketing, CEO’s Office, GCC, Room 2, City Chambers, George Square, Glasgow, G2 1DU.

It may be churlish to point out that the address is for PR and Marketing and there’s an election coming up…but as my nursery run is also fondly known as “the dog poo buggy slalom”, it’s good to see some attempt to sort out the problem.

On The Merry-Go-Round

So what’s opening up on Nithsdale Road? Merry-Go-Round is a not-for-profit organisation selling good-quality used children’s items.

As well as having a gorgeous shop packed full of goodies, they will also have a real nappy library for you to rake through, a toy library that you can borrow from, a fantastic parenting room and space for local groups to meet.

As it’s not-for-profit, the owners are being resourceful in refitting the shop. They have shelves made by Glasgow Wood Recycling from salvaged scaffolding planks, second-hand furniture which they’re repairing and repainting and the shop is being redecorated by volunteers, friends and family.

They’re always looking for extra help, donations of items to sell and to fit out the shop. Right now they’re looking for light grey floor paint, some sheets of MDF and someone with joinery skills to make mantelpieces for the original fires they’ve discovered.

Contact them via Facebook, or pop by the shop whenever you see the shutters open.
