A Window On The World

Glasgow City Council have recently updated their advice to homeowners on repairing and reinstating traditional windows. The Council have stepped up enforcement action in this area recently, so if you’re looking into fixing some draughty or damaged panes this is a good place to start. You can download the latest advice here.

Railway Rumblings

Been woken by strange rumblings in the night lately? It looks like Network Rail are carrying out engineering works along the rail line parallel to Moray Place.

The last couple of Sunday nights they have been out and about in the wee small hours creating some form of concrete base structures along the line. This has involved trucks, bags of concrete, cut back vegetation and destroying fences.

As ever with NR, there seems to be no thought given to informing the public or even the Council of the works they are doing.

Residents at 52 Marywood Square have been in contact with City Councillors and the police. As a result, a fallen fence was put back on Wednesday – by wrapping a chain at each corner of the fallen panel and the adjacent part of the standing fencing and securing the chain with a nut and bolt.

Councillors have also written to Network Rail, the Council Regeneration Service and the Police

Take a look at the photos of the base. On the far side of the track, it is not possible to get a clear photo due to the vegetation so they are taken some distance away.

On this side, you can’t really see the large base as it is below the embankment.

The last photo, taken from inside the house, is to show where it is on Moray Place and how close it is to the front window.

You can see the gaps made by removing some of the shrubs for the base. It does not appear to be a traffic light signal as they don’t have a base.

So, does anyone know what the structures might be for?

What should residents do if the trucks turn up in the middle of the night again?

The same base structure has been built, one terrace down, outside 32 Moray Place but this time on the far embankment. It is only visible through the vegetation on this side of the embankment.

There have been piles of concrete slabs placed at regular intervals along the Moray Place Embankment  between Queen’s Square and Crossmyloof. They may be along the whole embankment but I can’t see through the vegetation further down.

Looks like there is more building work on its way…but will be we ever find out what is going on?

Strathbungo Steakhouse?

A planning application has been submitted for the former Global Video site on the corner of Pollokshaws Road and Titwood Road but this time it actually looks pretty good.

In the past the Society has objected to numerous development plans which mainly involved building high-rise blocks of flats on the site.

The new plans keep the exterior and height of the building fairly unchanged and, as the building has been empty for some time, it would be great to see a thriving business there. Have a look at the plans and let us know what you think.

Glorious Gardens Show

Saturday sees one of my favourite events of the Glasgow summer – the New Victoria Gardens Summer Show.

I might be biased as a plotholder but it’s a fantastic day out for all the family and this year the NVG Allotment Association can boast two prizes – one for Glasgow’s most sustainable allotment and the coveted St Mungo’s Trophy awarded to the best allotment in the whole city.

Come through the green door in the wall to glimpse this little oasis in the middle of the city. Marvel over how lush the wet weather has made it, gasp in wonder that any produce managed to grow at all and enjoy great baking and crafts with the opportunity to buy some of the prize-winning produce to take home.

And do pop in to plot 22 (not prize-winning but much-loved) and say hello!

Bungo Gardeners Wanted

Enthusiastic but thwarted gardener? Fancy growing fruit and veg but don’t have the space at home? Local not-for-profit food shop Locavore has adopted the planters at Pollokshields West Station and will be filling them with strawberries, rhubarb and other edible delights over the coming weeks.

The first planting session was tonight and the next is from 6.30pm on Wednesday29th August. Just turn up ready to work and look forward to admiring the fruits of your labours whenever you catch the train.

Brighter Bungo!

The next Brighter Bungo clean up will take place from 10.30am on Saturday 8th September 2012, meeting at the junction of Moray Place and Nithsdale Road.

Volunteers are given high-visibility vests, bin bags, gloves and litter pickers and encouraged to clean up litter and fly-tipped rubbish from the area’s streets and back lanes. GCSS, Clean Glasgow campaign provides the equipment and removes the collected waste, this time from two different collection areas in Strathbungo.

It’s a great hands-on way to improve the area we live in and a fantastic way to tackle the niggling issues that annoy anyone who lives in a busy, urban area. Looking forward to seeing you all on 8th September!

Can’t wait until next month to sort out those niggles? If you’ve got a smartphone, Glasgow City Council and LES have launched a new phone app to make it easier for people to quickly report issues like missed bin collections, fly-tipping and graffiti. It can be downloaded for free for Apple and Android users.

As well as asking the Council to help, there’s always more residents can do to help keep the area tidy. If you have bulk items the council takes weeks to collect them, far better if you have transport to take bulk items to the recycling centre yourself. Polmadie depot has been recently revamped, is less than ten minutes away by car and it is much quicker to DIY than wait for the Council!

And it might be stating the obvious but one way to avoid the bin men leaving emptied bins in rows at the end of the lanes is to make sure both your bins and back gate are clearly numbered so they can be put back outside their rightful home.

Telephone Tower Trouble

Residents up the road in Pollokshields are preparing to march into planning battle for the fourth time over the same issue. What’s the campaign? A planning application to install a telephone mast and transmission disc on a building most Bungoans will see every day – the former church and current nursing home/nursery on the corner of Shields and Nithsdale Rd.

You can find out more on the history of George Rowan’s 1878 building here

With Doors Open Day around the corner and architectural heritage on everyone’s minds, the campaign are hoping to encourage people to join their fight by signing this letter: Church_Tower_Mast.

Strathbungo Society August Meeting

Reinvigorated and raring for action after our post-BITBL summer break, the Society will be meeting to catch up and plan for the year ahead this Monday 20th August, at 7.30pm in The Bungo on Nithsdale Road.

Agenda and last minute to follow but hot topics are likely to be the Great Bin Conundrum (Dougie Gellan of LES at the Council will be on hand to answer queries), our forthcoming AGM, guerrilla gardening projects, and the final tallies from Bungo In The Back Lanes.

Fancy getting involved or bringing your own agenda to the table? Just come along – we’ll be in the front den room – or post a comment and we’ll add it to our agenda.

My Shawlands – Your Shawlands

My Shawlands is a great new idea that needs your support.

Set up by the Shawlands Business Association to encourage more people to shop and spend locally, a Facebook page has just been developed to give a platform for businesses in Shawlands town centre to promote offers for local people including discounts, deals of the day, two-for-one offers, and other exciting promotions.

The page needs a minimum of 200 likes before the businesses will roll out these offers, so sign-up today and tell everyone you know too.

While you’re there, why not join the Strathbungo Society’s pages too? Search for Strathbungo Society and Brighter Bungo.

Glasgow Civic Forum

For several years now, the Strathbungo Society has been affiliated to the Scottish Civic Trust, which is the national body for the civic movement in Scotland.

The Trust comments and campaigns for the improvement of Scotland’s individual buildings and areas of distinction and is the umbrella body for over 100 civic and amenity groups across Scotland. SCT also runs the My Place Awards which celebrates good local design and conservation as nominated and evaluated by local people and co-ordinate Doors Open Days.

The Society’s chair attended a meeting arranged by the SCT last month to discuss setting up a Glasgow-specific civic forum along the lines of a similar network in Edinburgh. The minutes of the meeting are available here: GCF Minutes 15.6.12.

The proposed remit of the Glasgow Civic Forum is to:

  • provide a forum for community councils, local associations, amenity and civic groups to discuss issues of common interest
  • strengthen the dialogue between civic groups in the city and share best practice
  • encourage greater interest and involvement in national planning and built environment initiatives.

The Chair will be attending the initial meeting of the Forum on the 24th July when we will also elect a chair/convenor for the GCF and discuss the Scottish Government’s Architecture Policy consultation which ends in early September.

We feel the GCF could be a real force for good in Glasgow’s civic society and also provide a great opportunity to work with other groups on issues that affect us all, creating a strong voice on campaigns such as that against VAT on repairs to listed buildings and an opportunity to share ideas and expertise.

And it doesn’t just have to be heritage issues. Voluntary groups in all areas of civic society could benefit from the support and information of the Forum. Membership is free and open to representatives of the following groups within the Glasgow City Council boundaries:

  • Community Councils
  • Street Associations
  • Area Associations
  • Civic/amenity groups
  • Local interest groups

The Forum is not open to private individuals, political groups or commercial organisations.

If you’re involved in a group that would also like to send a representative, or if you have any questions, please contact Gemma Wild at gemma.wild@scottishcivictrust.org.uk or 0141 221 1466.
