A Crafty Christmas

A pop-up shop has been created for the festive period in Shawlands Arcade showcasing the wares of local craftspeople.

It’s a great opportunity to buy handmade goodies from people in your local community and a great idea from the owners of the arcade to encourage local enterprise.

Opening days and times are on the flyer and there are also kids’ craft sessions as part of the open days.

Can’t make it along on Saturdays? Another crafty alternative is the Afternoon Twee events on Sunday 2nd and 9th at Tusk in Shawlands.

The fantastic farmers market will be in Queens Park this Saturday and on the 15th. Most of the stallholders will have special items for Christmas and the chance to pre-order meat etc for the big day. Many of the stallholders live locally so you really are keeping your cash in the community.

Although they do not sell them at the farmers market, regular stall holders Eden Mill Farm also sell (and deliver) great-quality Christmas trees in several varieties and sizes.

Looking for something special and affordable for the kids, pop in to Merry-go-round. They are holding a Christmas open evening this Tuesday 27th November from 6-9pm and have a huge choice of Christmas gifts aimed at young children.

Keeping Christmas Local

At The Strathbungo Society we’re evangelical about our local shops and services and the run up to Christmas is no exception. I’m expecting to be able to get almost all my Christmas shopping at shops within 2 miles of my house, keeping my cash in my community.

Doubtful you can do the same? Why not challenge our local knowledge? It’s amazing the number of amazing shops and suppliers there are in the area, so if you are looking for something specific and don’t know if anyone nearby will have it, ask by posting a comment here and we’ll see what we can do.

And if we fail? Well, there’s still a way you can keep some cash in the community even if you’re shopping online. easyfundraising is the easiest way to raise money for The Strathbungo Society. Shop with any of over 2,000 well known retailers listed on easyfundraising.org.uk and a percentage of what you spend is passed to The Strathbungo Society at no additional cost to you. Retailers include Amazon, M&S, Boden, House of Fraser, eBay and many more.

Simply register to support us today and click through. On average, each retailer will donate 5% of the cost of your shopping – and those donations soon mount up, especially at this time of year.

Christmas Shopping Night

The nights are drawing in, the Christmas ads have started, so why not wallow in the Christmas spirit and get your shopping started early and on your doorstep?

The Nithsdale Rd/Kildrostan St shops are hosting their annual Christmas shopping evening tomorrow, Wednesday 14th November. There’ll be carol singers, mulled wine, nibbles and great early-bird offers.

Most of the local businesses take part and if, like me, you struggle to get round local shops with toddlers in tow, you’ll appreciate the chance to browse at your leisure. Things kick off at 6.30pm and finish around 9.30. It’s a great opportunity to make the most of our fantastic local shops.

23 Marywood Square – Update

If you wish to comment on this planning application and did not receive a neighbour notification from the Council, you must do so by tomorrow – Friday 19th October. You can send your comments by email.

Read more about the application and how to comment (plus a lively debate about the application in the comments section) on the blog post further down the page: https://bungoblog.com/general/backpackers-hostel-on-marywood-square/

The issue has also been added to the agenda for the AGM on Tuesday. Residents who received a notification letter have until Tuesday 30th October to comment.

Backpacker’s Hostel On Marywood Square

A backpackers’ hostel in Hillhead

A planning application has recently been submitted to convert “offices” (the former dance school) at the ground and basement level of 23 Marywood Square into a hostel with 24 beds.

Full details can be found here: https://publicaccess.glasgow.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=externalDocuments&keyVal=M996V3EX0FZ00

The Society has in the past objected to sub-division of properties in the area and HMO licences as we feel these conflict with the Conservation Area appraisal. We also raised concerns over the running of the Queens Park Hotel. Once the Society has drafted a response I’ll post it on the blog (please see update below).

In the meantime, the planning application reference number is Ref. No: 12/01693/DC

If you wish to comment or object to the application, you might want to consider the impact on the conservation area, referring to the conservation area document, which is available online (PDF), amenities such as bins and car parking, the current city plan and its design guides for listed buildings and those in conservation areas which you can find here.

You can send a comment or objection via email to planning.representations@drs.glasgow.gov.uk or by post to Development and Regeneration Services, Development Control, 231 George St, Glasgow G1 1RX. The case officer is D Drummond. The comments and objections of neighbours will always count for more than those of a single organisation.

The deadline for neighbour comments is 30th October, so I suspect this subject will also be discussed at the Strathbungo Society AGM on Tuesday 23rd October, 7-9pm, Queens Park Church, 170 Queens Drive.

Update: If you wish to object, you can download and use this document as a starting point. It outlines the main grounds for objection and is based on the objection letter the Society has submitted: 23_Marywood_Objection_Letter

There is strength in numbers on issues like these. The Society has already been in touch with elected representatives and the community council to seek their support and has objected to the plans as an organisation but neighbour objections do carry great weight.

Queens Park Arena Launch Event

Queens Park Arena will be opening this Saturday with an all-afternoon launch event.

A few years ago the Society diverted funds from the unfinished back lanes pilot to the scheme to refurbish and reopen the area around the old bandstand which burned down in 1996 after decades of neglect.

The Arena is a project developed by all four local community councils and aims to be a community performance space. Curious? Come along and get a taste of what the arena will be used for and speak to those who’ve got it up and running.

A Local Shopping Wish List

It’s been hard to miss the speedy work being done to build the new Sainsbury’s Local store on Darnley Road. The construction is in the final stages and a lot of residents have been discussing the pros and cons of the new store opening and the impact on local businesses.

In fact, some residents have gone further than just discussing the issue and have written letters to Sainsbury’s to raise their concerns and suggest items the shop might stock and not stock!

Our small, local shops give the area a real buzz and unique atmosphere but almost everyone will use supermarkets for some if not most of their shopping – wouldn’t it be great if we could model our local supermarket to stock the items we otherwise travel out of the area to get?

I’ve attached a copy of the basic letter but everyone is bound to have a different wishlist of items, so if you want to try to influence the stock list, what have you got to lose? Now’s your chance! General Sainsburys list

The letter can be posted to the head office:

New Conservation Areas

CONSULTATION – DRAFT SHAWLANDS CROSS & WAVERLEY PARK CONSERVATION AREA APPRAISAL
As planning authority, Glasgow City Council is required to consider which parts of its area are of special architectural or historic significance and where appropriate designate these as conservation areas.

There will be a public meeting to discuss the proposals on:-
