Ive been here for 4yrs now and Im interested to know more about Strathbungo. I hope Ive remembered this correctly, I believe a neighbour told me that priests? used to live in the building Im now in. I think she called them Volunteers of the Land? I read that this area also had mining works under it, is that right? Id basically just like to know more about all things Strathbungo and wondered if you know of the best sources of information. What undiscovered treasures & little known facts can I find out about? Thanks.
I live in No 19 Queen Square which was the home of the Servite Friars (their name was above the door on the light) who lived here for a number of years. They reported directly to Rome rather than the local priest. Our lounge on the middle floor at the front was their church/place of worship and was all painted white (except were the cross had been and took 2 paints before – sadly it disappeared) in including the black marble fireplace which is now restored – probably not to it’s orginal glory but I tried my best. the kitchen on the main floor had 2 sinks – must have been a lot of washing up! They left more than 20 years ago and to my knowledge went to all sorts of different places. I reckon there were about 10 of them in the house all with separate rooms, own sinks in each and locks on all the doors. I believe they were very friendly to the neighbours, helped many people and also performed weddings etc.
if anyone has any other information i would be delighted to hear about them or the house.
Hi!
I just came across your post. I remember the Servites well, I k re some of them and I was a regular visitor to the Servite Friary. In fact, on a couple of occasions I stayed overnight there.
I’m fascinated to hear that the house has become a family home again. They were a happy and friendly group of men and it was always a happy place to visit.
