The Strathbungo Society

The Strathbungo Society was formed in 1971, primarily to promote the conservation and regeneration of the area, at a time when it was under threat from development, including a new motorway. You can read a 1984 pamphlet from the society (PDF, 6Mb) that details some history of the society and the conservation area.

The Society was re-energised in 1994 and developed and broadened its aims to include community events and outward-looking incomers – young families, professionals, media and art, activists.

The society is run by a committee of volunteers, who meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm. The venue is usually The Bungo Bar & Kitchen at 17 Nithsdale Road. The calendar lists upcoming meetings. The committee hears from sub-groups on communications, events, the environment, Queens Park, etc. Importantly, the Strathbungo Society is not a community council and is not affiliated to any other public or private sector organisation.

The society runs a year-round calendar of events and publishes a quarterly newsletter. The society is supported by membership subscriptions, events, newsletter advertising, occasional grants and the odd coins from a grateful community.

    Hi

A question for the historically minded – my great-grandparents were married at 7 Moray Place, Regents Park, Strathbungo, on 1 April 1875. Can anyone tell me what would have been there then?

    Thanks

    Hi Frank,

You might want to get in touch with the current owner – David Cook. Address 7 Moray Place, Strathbungo. Scotland, UK G41 2AQ.

Most of us have the original documents to the house and can tell you who was living there on any particular date over the past 150 years. The house was built in 1860 – a good 15 years before your great grandparents were married.

    Cheers

Hi myself and my family have been living in queen square for 2 years now. We love our home, the surronding areas and the community atmosphere. Unfortunaly, we have had problems with neighbours since we have moved in and recently one of our other neighbours was beaten up by them and myself and partner have been spat upon. Police and community officers are involved but without mentioning any names i was wondering if anyone else has suffered as we have by the same family. Is there someone i/we could speak to within the society that may help?? many thanks x

    Hi Isabel,

I am more than happy to chat to you about it. You are right in approaching the police in the first instance and I very much hope that it has been resolved now.

We can certainly post something on the blog about the general issue (no specifics as you mention) and give advice to people on what to do with bad neighbours.

I do now know of any other similar issue in Strathbungo though I have heard of petty crime in the area.

    cheers

Just picked this up. Bear with me and I’ll check the Title Deeds. The short answer is ‘our house’, built 1859-61. But I’ll look at the titles and tell you who lived there at that time. might take me a while, though.

    Hi David

The post office directory shows the occupier of 7 Moray Place in 1866-1867 as:
    Walker, David, produce broker, 21 Virginia street;
    bouse, 7 Moray place, Strathbungo.

My great grandparents were also married there in 1869.

Did you find any information on why people were being married in your house?

    Regards

    @Stacey Macintosh
You may find you get more response posting either in the Strathbungo/Shawlands Facebook group or on Streetlife (the latter is very good for finding trades).

Hi I know this is not exactly a Strathbungo question but I know that a lot of you are historians, Can anyone tell me the history of Leithgton Avenue in Shawlands will all those 1960’s type buildings, anything you can tell me about them. Oh also is it a nice wee area to live, I do know its not far from Strathbungo 🙂 Looking for the history etc.

    • Heather Alexander

I’ll pass this to our resident historian but you may find you get some responses posting in the Strathbungo/Shawlands Community Facebook group if you haven’t already…

    thank you kindly Heather 🙂

Don’t know much but you could start here

Shame you can’t see the photos anymore. The thread also goes on to mention Elgin Villas, which turned out to be the home of Daniel McNicol, who built Regent Park Square and half of Queen Square in Strathbungo.

    Hi there,
Just wondering if there will be a Bungo at the Bells celebration to see in 2018?
    Thanks,
    Marese

    • Heather Alexander

Yes indeed – 11.45pm at corner of Moray Place and Queen Square!

    Hi
I recall seeing a Strathbungo or Pollokshields Q&A Forum but cannot find it now. Did I imagine this or can someone point me in the right direction

    • adownie

There was a forum but it was little used and didn’t work very well. You can comment here, or use our facebook page. Anything particular we can help with?

Hi I stayed in a flat in Nithsdale Street 1971 to 1973. I seem to remember an engineering company I think in March Street / Nithsdale Drive at this time. Does anyone remember the name of this company and what exactly it did?

    • Heather Alexander

Might also be worth asking on Facebook, eg at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1065265356866742/

    • adownie

Iain, I think this would have been 55 Nithsdale Drive, now a modern tenement block built in the early 2000s. Before that I think was an engineering works, and vaguely recall seeing who was based there. It may have been Council owned, and there is a complicated story about why it was never built on before, which will appear on Bygone Bungo (http://bygone.bungoblog.com) whenever I get around to it. If I find out, I’ll let you know. Andrew

      • adownie

Found it. On Bygone Bungo. In an old Society newsletter. See the newletter archive at https://bygone.bungoblog.com/wp/strathbungo-news/ and check out March 2001. The company was Southern Cylinder Grinding Co, doing engine refurbishment, at 57 Nithsdale Drive. Some trade directories still list them!
Heather, I’m disappointed you didn’t point him my way!

I wish to install fibre cable for Internet access. Living at No 31 Moray Place….do I need to obtain Council permission for the drilling work ?

    • adownie

I doubt it, but you would have to ask the council
